The 2019 Hodgon Annual reloading manual shows these two powders, H4198 & IMR4198 being the two optimum powders for reloading the 45-70 cartridge.

Pound for pound, the price differential is C$3.50, essentially insignificant. The two powders stack up pretty much the same, with H4198 being listed as #123rd vs IMR4198 as #122nd. Pretty close.

The other suitable powder is IMR3031, listed as #129th, burning rate.

I bought the H4198 with the idea to start using 40-45 grains with a LEE hard cast & powder coated 340 grain RN FP bullet & work up from there. Bullets sized to .459.
Thoughts?

My 450 marlin likes H 4198, barnes 250 TSX, and a heavy crimp.
Low s.d. and nice groups at 200..
Is the IMR version temp. Sensitive??...
Might have to give it a try , after your trial and error.
I also liked H 322, and re 7 and accurate 1860..

The 4198 did shine above all others.
Good shooting

I dont handload for the 45-70, but i have tried a lot of different powders in .444 marlin, which is similar caliber.Hodgdon 4198 is slower than imr, i get at least 150 fps more with h4198.

I currently load a hornady 300 grain xtp bullet and it is a tack driver.h4198 performs very well with cast bullet.

i think your load of 40-45 grains of h4198 will be in the lower end, velocity wise, 1500-1600 fps

For that kind of velocity, i prefer imr 4227, a much faster powder.

Good luck, be safe

Keep checking Canada Ammo's site for their D4198. It's their OEM powder that is very close to IMR4198 and about $130 for a 5lb jug last time they had stock.

I just checked, and they're showing 50 units in stock right now.

I have all three powders but haven't got to comparing the D4198 to the others just yet. They are great powders in the 45-70,.222 and 7.62x39

I'm currently using both IMR 4198 and Reloder 7 for my 1895G.Be careful with data for Reloder 7 as it has changed ( different suppliers during the Hercules to Alliant change ).Lymans data has changed with the times but the visual discription of the powder hasn't ("has a mix of red, yellow and blue identifing grains").Big differences in loading data from Lyman 47th to Lyman 50th.

Canada Ammo just got stock on D4198. Well worth the price. I find it to be just as good as IMR4198 but almost half the price.

Spend over $200 and shipping is free. Not hard to do there....
