I'm looking at going hog hunting in Sask next spring. The location requires bow, blackpowder and/ or shotgun only.

I'm thinking rifled shotgun. (catilevered 870, 20 inch barrel, rifled slug gun with a red-dot scope). I'm looking at the Remington.

Hog hunting thoughts ? I have a Benelli Super-Nova 26" 12 G but the rifled barrels are WAY too expensive and hard to come by.

thoughts ?

rifled slugs

why not see how rifled slugs shoot in you shotgun

thought of it but considering accuracy, and having clean kill shot on a potentially large wild hog, I dont know if I'm comfortable using my Benelli with bead sights. Next time I go to the range though I'm going to bring some rifled slugs and try it out to 100 yards on a home-made pig target.

If you check the regs. here a little closer our shotgun/muzzle loader zones are only for an open big game season. You can't carry a centerfire rifle from Sept. 1 through Dec. 8. At any other time of the year you are go to go with whatever you want and there is no caliber restrictions on our wild pigs as they are not wildlife and the D.N.R. has no say over how or with what you hunt them. That said I am a firm believer in bigger is better as far a caliber in the pursuit of these animals. I like my .450 marlin in the bush and either my .300 or .325 if they are caught out in the open.

19 wild pigs and counting with my biggest being a 400lb+ boar that I got last October while moose hunting.

Had a nice hunt 3 years ago Hog hunting with my 444 shot 3 and this caliber is very convincing on the pigs... JP.

post pics of that pig

you have to post pics of that sucker.

As for the particular caliber its not the DNR regs but the outfitter/ host that prefers it. I'm cool with it, it'll give me an excuse to get another gun and I can always use it for deer or whatever down the road.

hog hunting contacts

I would use my Browning BLR in 358 Win with 250gr bullets @ 2300fps or a 50 cal muzzleloader. Sounds like fun. Where and who do you get a hold of to hunt pigs there? I wanna go!

I'm going on an arranged hunt wtih a friend on private property but fellow CGN'er "TBDTP," above sounds like a born and bred Sask boy who could pass on a few pointers. I guess Sask doesn't regulate Hog hunting like big game so there's no tags or seasons. It would sure help if you knew someone out there thats for sure.

I started on the hunting forumn, asked a few questions, searched the interweb for Canadian guides and regulations, and watched a sh*tload of video's that featured wild boar hunts from Hawaii to Romania, Sask to Florida.

good choice, what I have is a (Leupold scoped 870 slug) for for wild ham & bacon. Where in Sask are they? Lord knows you never ever see any here in Mb. There were many around, some say there still out there, but where? Might be a reward available for info leading to a successful wild boar hunt in south eastern Mb! ;)

I talked to a fellow recently that lives north east of Prince Albert and apparently he has a real problem with wild pigs. Unfortunately, I can't give you
any better info then that, but it might get you looking in the right area.

thanks a million for that info! I'll get a hold of Kelly, he's a combine pilot in around P.A., oh yeah, you already know that! Thx man. ;)

a smooth bore with rifled slugs will shoot ok just got to see what works better in your gun

my favorite slugs are .69 round balls cast in pure lead loaded on top of blackpowder(old Husqvarna double with 2.5" chambers) thay punch through alot of ply wood
