So, I've been wanting to see the lone star state, and my brother and I have the opportunity to get away for a week or so in the new year. Got all the ATF forms to take some firearms along, the hunting regs are clear, just need to find a local to help us out. Anybody here have any leads on which guides/outfits/areas we should check out? Thanks in advance.

Google is your friend. ;)

I went to south Texas for hogs and javalina last Feb. This Feb. I'm hunting a place in east Texas for hogs and a Corsican ram.

Makes a GREAT winter getaway!

Gee, that's helpful. I'm aware of google, but was kind of hoping that someone that has done this before could maybe give some productive input, as there are many outfits that advertise hunts, and since this is a discussion board, I thought I'd see if anyone here could help.

Lots of discussions and outfitters offering hunts on the Accurate Reloading website regarding this. There was even a thread on there a few months back from an outfitter offering a night-time hog hunt and providing AR's with night-vision scopes for the hunt. I think that was in Texas...apparently legal down there, and sounded like a very unique "hunt". Most of these outfits also include predators in the package, so you could whack a couple of those scrawny southern coyotes.

Be sure to bring along a pair or two of good brush pants. Those Texas hogs love to hang out in the nastiest briar patches.

Awww.

What is it you want? A place to go? Even though I shot pigs, javalinas, and a coyote, I wouldn't recommend the place I went last year (or I would have suggested it to you in the first place  ). Of course I can't say anything yet about where I'm going this time. So......????

If you want help from "a local" wouldn't it be a good idea to visit a few Texas hunting forums? I doubt if you'll find any here on CGN. :p

I can tell you this...do your homework. I spent months planning, researching, emailing, talking to ppl on the phone, etc. It's not hard to separate schit from puddy if you put the time and effort into it. Decide what animals you want to shoot (hogs, exotics, javi's, predators, etc) and start googling Texas hunting ranches that offer them. Then spend a few bucks on long distance phone calls.

You will need a $45 non-res 5 day hunting license.

I realize that this is sort of a short-notice venture, our schedules just sort of happened to be open all of a sudden. Maybe there isn't enough time, just trying to see if we can make something work.

Killzone: I also understand that Texas outfitters probably don't spend their days on cgn waiting to see if someone like me will ask about them, I was hoping for people like you, who have gone there, to share what they have learned/experienced so that I can try to make the most of this opportunity. My brother and I have both been researching this, but sometimes word-of-mouth is just as important.

When did you want to go and what do you want to hunt?

You have to send a copy of your 5 day license in with your ATF importation form. It takes about a month to get approval. Of course you'll need to know WHAT 5 days you are hunting before you can can purchase the license so.....

Bringing home any meat is probably unreasonable, especially if your flying. I make arrangements with the outfitter to donate it to a local needy family. I brought home a Javalina skull for a Euro mount last time and this time I plan to bring home the horns and cape from my ram.

There are so many options it can make your head spin. You won't find "somebody willing to do it for beer" etc, you're going to have to pay and like a regular tourist, and it's easy as pie to get set up. We went to Florida just before last Christmas, and there was literally a couple hundred choices. I think this is the wrong place to ask advice.

Most of it's not really pig hunting, either, but pig killing. The typical hunt is with dogs baying up the hog, and then it is killed with a knife, or speared, or shot if you really want to. Not my kind of hunting I decided. Looks like Killzone had a good hunt though, with a different setup on his javelina.

Ardent - it was alot different in Texas. At least where I was. It's more like bear hunting up here. You hunt bait...either a timed feeder or a "corned" road, from an elevated blind. It's actually very cool...you see a ton of different animals. LOTS of deer. You're right about the pig killing, but that's what you're there for right! ;) In 3 days, eight guys killed 23 pigs and a bunch of Javi's on my hunt last year.

It would be nice if someone was willing to do it for beer, but I wasn't expecting that. However, I am sort of on a budget now, since I just got a new furnace installed today, and until the old one went, had a lot more money to put toward the trip :bangHead:.

Our schedules are fairly flexible so the rough plan is this: find area/guide/accomodations; establish dates (in order to get 5-day license, and allow enough time for ATF approval); apply for ATF approval (want to take a 45/70, 7x57, 1911, and since its Texas, a .45 Colt Vaquero); drive down and spend 4-5 days there.

So it all hinges on the area and the outfit at this point.

Your area/guide/accommodations will be all inclusive at a ranch, there are no real other alternatives as Texas is 99.9% private land. North or east Texas will be a shorter drive (Texas is big).

Just hogs?

As Ardent said, there are a lot of options. I guess one way to narrow it down would be to find a "package" that offers value. One problem I've seen is outfitters that allow one hog in the price, seems like a lot of travel for that. Need to find a value package that offers more bang :D. As for other species, I'd like to bag something else, but that might be limited by what area we go with, so that's another factor yet to be determined.
