Heh guys, just wondering if anyone here has done much shooting from a tripod rest? I scored a used manfrotto tripod and ball head for a great price, and I'm thinking about shelling out the cash for one of those Hog Saddles out of the U.S. Anybody tried one? Seems like it would make a great varmit rig or a set-up for a blind.....hell even gopher blasting.

No experience with the Hog other than reading numerous positive reviews about it. I regularly use a tripod and saddle from Precision Rifle Solutions (PRS). It's a great system, although it does not clamp the rifle.

Tripods are the way to go. Hard to go back to bipods after one is spoiled by the adaptability a tripod offers.

I second that for the PRS cradle. I have done a lot of shooting with that cradle and it works great. The tripod went down for the count though and now I use it in conjunction with a Manfrotto tripod. Night and day difference. Hog Saddle is quite a bit of scratch. If I was issued it by all means but otherwise I don't think the extra cost is worth the gains.

I don't use the tripod to replace a bipod though. With the Manfrotto tripod I can use it from standing all the way to the ground. Its used primarily for positional shooting.

I just came across this on "the Hide" great piece of kit, anymore reviews or comments? It's appears to be well built and they have a "cheaper" model as well the Pig saddle.

Dang man... Ha ha, I'm soo poor I got the cheapest manfrotto I could afford or like 1 level above that and then I built my cradle from a 5 dollar wall bracket at princess auto and some foam from a 10$ sleeping mat at Canadian tire, also some digi camo duct tape lol. I wouldn't mind a PIG saddle at some point in the near future as the PIG and HOG saddles both look AMAZING! Congrats man, and be sure to post a detailed review and PICS! Lots and lots of PICS!

So the Hog Saddle actually clamps onto the rifle? How well does it hold during recoil? I recently shot a match in Utah, inclines were between 10-15% which I thought would not matter, but in reality my Harris 9-13" was not up to the task, on one shot I used my tripod with a cheap V mount gun rest, it worked awesome but I thought a more rugged stable rest would be even better. Would love to hear more about this unit. Please give some feed back/review once you get it and have some field time with it.

From what I've heard as well, a good sling is required to help keep the rifle steady in it, are you gonna go that method or plan to just go without for the time being? I'm not trying to troll, I'm asking a serious question.

Looks good for a sniper type thing but no doubt there would be allot of movement in the setup for precision.

The idea of the tripod is that prone is too low to see over the obstructions and there isn't a bench to shoot off of. The alternative is a sitting/kneeling/standing positon without external support.
