Hogs

I got into a herd of them this fall. The little guys (70 lbs) stopped quick after being hit with a 150 gr. from a 30-06. The big tusker (300 lb boar) took more to keep him down. After skinning it out we checked the hide, 1 1/8" thick over the ribcage.
Another guy I talked to knocked down a couple with a 243 but they didn't slow down much after getting to their feet. He guessed them to be in the 200 lb. range.

Your 7mm will be good but I would suggest a heavier bullet.

I got an email back from some other hog hunters I know.

Memo - hunt hogs religiously in turkey. he uses a .308win and Norma Products. didn't specify weight. says he never has a problem knocking them down.

the dutch lads - private hog hunting ranches in Germany. these guys kill a lot of big pigs every year. .30-06 & 7x64 are they're favorites. lots of funky euro rounds I've never heard of. I asked about magnums and they said they would be asked to leave the hunt if they showed up with such unsportman like rifles. :ninja:

I am considering 160 grain accubonds(my buddy is using a 30-06) and, if I get permission, a Sharps 45 caliber hunt.

how would ANY size hog stand up to a 9,3x57 loaded with a soft nosed 286 gr privipartizans moving at about 2000 fps ?[or would he be still standing at all?]

Use whatever you'd shoot big deer with. In a 7mm I'd use 140's. A big pig has gristle plates plus thick hide, a lot of fat and they're tough. 7mm'll kill them just fine. Next hog hunt I'm taking my .45-70 XLR.

I'd just like a chance to HUNT hogs in Canada-I was down in NewZealand this spring -they are a very much sought after game animal down there. They have hog hunting magazines featuring womens hog hunts, hogs with dogs, guns, bows even spears-the whole bit.No season-no limit-and in some cases they could even sell the meat in the local market
