Holder for extra cartridges - what do you use?

What's a good cartridge holder to put on the butt stock of a single shot rifle?
  • Are they all pretty much the same, or are some better than others?
  • What kind of designs are out there other than the simple elastic sleeve?
  • Is it better to hold the shells vertically or horizontally?
  • Do the sleeves slide up and down the stock after the elastic gets used a few times in the bush?
Let's see some pics if you have them, of different types.


I should add, I need two: one has a pistol grip stock like "gitrdun" below.... and the other is a straight style stock, no pistol grip.

If you have a wooden stock, then leather is the way to go, it just works better. Mine was custom made by my own design (well kinda). The bullets will never fall out, the leather just hugs them nicely. I believe that crazy_davey also knows some guy in Alaska that sells them, mine is from a local saddle maker.

I use a 6-loop holder (black neoprene with nylon elastic loops) which slips on the buttstock of my Tikka T3 Lite in .300 WSM. It's an el-cheapo 'Uncle Mike's' version, pretty much 'universal fit'.

When kept tips-up, I can load individual rounds VERY quickly to top off my 3-shot mag and the chamber before moving in to confirm a kill (less than 5 seconds to a hot chamber, 20 seconds to +3 in the mag) - even with gloves on. I'm glad to say I've never had to top off and keep shooting immediately at a wounded animal, but I know it'd be a great set-up if I ever DID need to do so.

In my opinion they make a rifle look ugly and I can't see why anyone would want one. Most rifles have a magazine with at least four extra cartridges. What in the world makes you think you need quick access to more ammunition? Many years ago I went on a day hunt and took seven cartridges so I could have two left over for my pocket. Actually, I put one in each of two pockets so they wouldn't rattle. I shot a moose that day, so thought I had found a lucky number, and most of my life I have gone out hunting with a full mag and two in the pocket.

I'm not talking about "most" rifles, smart guy. ;)
The two rifles I have in mind are both falling block single-shot rifles.

I don't KNOW that I need quick access to more ammo, but where's the harm?
 
If they're falling-block single shots, then a forearm-mounted, belt-mounted, or thigh-mounted rig will be your best bet.

With a left-forearm mount, you can shoot, cycle the action open with your right hand, pull a cartridge out of the holder with the right hand, slam it into the breech, close the action, and be ready to fire without taking your left hand off of the forend and losing rough point of aim.

I chamber a round when I am ready to shoot and stick a spare under my watch strap in case a second shot is required. Other than that I keep a few more rounds in a leather belt case.
 
I bought a cheap elastic one that holds 8 shells. I cut it in half, put one half on the buttstock, the other I sewed inside the pocket of my hunting jacket. So I can put 4 shells on the gun and 4 in my pocket and they don't rattle.

Even if I take the one off the gun, I still have a full mag and 4 nicely placed in my pocket.
 
I use a butt stock holder on my winchester model 70 and it works great, I can carry 9 spare rounds plus the full mag. Not quite as pretty as without but it works and actually protects the wood some when hunting.

I just put one on my ruger #1 as well, it's in .223 so a quick follow up shot is very likely needed, be it a pair of coyotes or just a hot gopher patch. I have not played with it much to see how well it works with a small cartridge like .223.
 
Heres what I use.....elastic, it overlaps and joins with velcro....handy when hunting, but easy to take off when you don't want your rifle to be ugly.

I've used the elastic type on my 88 Winchester. I found it tends to creep up the stock, and, if I carry the rifle on a sling ( something I rarely do) I have to carry on my left shoulder, or I'll lose 308 cartridges.
I've never had a use for it so far, and it may get sidelined for a different rifle.

I hope you're joking, cause that's the dumbest thing I've read on here in a while.

This looks like an interesting method... I like it! :)

keep the suggestions coming though... there must be some more creative solutions out there, being that gunnutz like to tinker!
