Hole in M305 stock?

I have a hole in my stock just forward of the front sling attachment. I am going to bed my chu-wood stock,while bedding the stock I was going to fill in this hole and put a swivel in there for my harris bipod. Should I leave the hole open?
After bedding my chu-wood stock I plan to coat it with bedliner and sand it down. I know this is alot of work but I cannot afford another stock right away and I have the bedding and bedliner in my shop.

It's called the 'weep hole'. It's meant to allow water to drain out.

Fill it. Not required for casual use, IMHO. I filled mine, and have never had a reason to need it.
 
Do not fill it!!! It has nothing to do with water drain. It has everything to do with a gas hole. It allows the excess gas from under the stock a place to get out.
It will also keep the inside of your srock cleaner, note I did not say clean but cleaner.

Really? I always assumed it was for water.

But, that being said, I've never had a problem with the gas needing a way out. Mine cycles perfectly without the hole.
 
yes, it will cycle as if you do not close this hole, but if you close it inner side of the stock will become black from gases leaving gas system....
just pay attantion when you shot, and you will notice gases leavin system through this hole on the stock...
do not cover it....just make another one :)

Canuck got it right. The rest of you are crazy........:)
If your rifle doesn't cycle when you "plug" the hole, it's because you plugged it and something is interfering with the piston during cycling.
Read the TM for the M14.....has all the nomenclature and clearly states it's a weep hole for water. The gas bleed is on the bottom of the cylinder, there shouldn't be any(or very very minimal) gas excaping around the piston in a properly fit gas system.
 
Hitzy and Canucklehead are exactly right. Go ahead and cover the hole with your finger when you fire it. Nothing other that the breeze of the piston and op-rod stroking back and forth.
Now look at the underside of your gas cylinder just forward of the stock, that's the gas vent. Do Not cover that with your finger when you fire. Just for giggles you can lay it on a sheet of paper and pop a couple rounds.
 
We'd all be cleaning M14 stocks like crazy if that was a hole for venting gas......bad enough cleaning the rifle......

Honestly? Drainage for water? WTF?
 
How many of us go swimming with their rifles, raise your hands. What, no one?! Wow, ok, use the hole for whatever you please, the little bit of rain we get exposed to will evaporate when the barrels get warm. Next topic!:runaway:

I hereby sit corrected....having reviewed my TM for the M-14, I admit I was wrong(Hanging my head in shame) the hole is for the drainage of excess water.
Still, you should not plug it, it is there foir a reason and it is too far forward to make a good bi-pod mount hole anyway.

Hows that? My understanding is that the further forward the bipod is mounted to easier it is to shoot accurately, everything else being equal.
 
That hole actually makes an awesome place to use one of harris's stock adapters, cant remember which number exactly, but thats how I mounted the standard swivel stud which made it possible to use my harris. Sling swivel was still available, nothing interfereing with it.....it actually balanced out the rest of the rifle, and I could hold it one handed just forward of the mag, and it would sit very nice! Worked for me, wish I had pictures.....

Here ya go. That's exactly what I did, mounted the bipod in the weep hole. I know, the stock is a bit thin there but it's been there for a long time and hasn't caused me any problems yet. If it starts to crack, I'll put some extra fibreglass/epoxy around it. The hole is indeed for water to drain out of the stock but unless you're in the Marine Corps (amphibious operations), you're not likely to ever need it :D

I just did mine this way,I hockey taped the drain hole, filled with epoxy. after it's hard drill out for the swivel stud and countersink for the nut on the inside, just be sure the bolt and nut are flush in the barrel channel. I suppose a screw in rear stud would work, but I prefer the bolt and nut,done the same on an sks :)
