You can find some enviable things amongst the OB's. Things like this Parker A1 Special shotgun made for Czar Nicholas II of Russia that auctioned at http://www.juliaauctions.com ...

Near mythical, and at one time thought lost, Parker A1 Special shotgun made for Czar Nicholas II of Russia. After completion, WWI broke out and the gun was never delivered to the Czar but eventually sold to a NY banker whose family it stayed in until Oct. 2006, when it was consigned to Julia’s. The gun, subject to incredible speculation and numerous articles concerning its discovery was estimated at $225,000-325,000. Sold for $287,500. New world record for any American shotgun ever sold at auction.

Matched pair of Holland & Holland shotguns

"Royal Sidelock Hammerless Ejector"
2 ½" game guns, serial No. 25100 & 25101 'Circa 1907".
This pair of guns are rounded body actions with magnificent special order game scene engraving.
This, combined with the rare side safety make these the best pair of game guns in Australia.

Built for driven game, both barrels are 28" choked imp cyl to both barrels,
a letter from Holland & Holland confirms original dimensions. Both barrels are in proof at .736.

No. 1 barrel set has excellent bores except for a small ripple 6" from muzzle on the right-hand barrel (very minor).
No. 2 barrel set is in 90% condition. Some very minor pits near the muzzle,
the barrel also has some very slight movement on the front hinge pin. Taking into consideration the age of these 2 guns,
these very minor blemishes are insignificant in regards to the overall condition of both guns.

Serial No. 25100
Weight is 6 ¾ lb, L.O.P. 14 ¾ to recoil pad.
Drop at comb is 1 3/8"
Drop at heel is 2 ¼"

Serial No. 25101
Weight is 7 lb, L.O.P. 14 ¾ to recoil pad.
Drop at comb is 1 3/8"
Drop at heel is 2 ¼"

Both stocks are highly figured half-round pistol grips in excellent condition with excellent checkering,
complete in double oak & leather case with original trade labels.

These would be an incredible addition to any collection.
US $47,000

OMG!!! Rust on the trigger guard!! Screws buggered!!

Whose evil twin brother's hands did that last H&H fall into?
X2. There are a number of questions that should be asked about that gun not the least of which is the wall thickness on a gun with a bore measuring .736.

While pictures can't tell everything the darker colour of the forend, absence of drop points and the gaps around the locks might lead to the conclusion that the gun was restocked at some point and not by Holland. Also hard to explain is the 1/4 pound difference between the two guns. A pair should weigh the same.

Your observations seem accurate to me. While PoW on English game guns are not uncommon it is very likely the pair started out with straight grips.

As for the gunsmith/stockmaker who may have "toiled" later on those firearms .....appears to suggest that one of the previous owners did not care much.
