Hollow Point hunting Bullets

Just wondering what type of hollow point bullets do any of you guys use for hunting? These are the ones I have tried. Now shot placement is a huge part of this question.

1. Sierra Match King. Not good ( recovered the deer ) there was a bullet pass through, not a very good exit wound. First and last time for ever using those Bullets

2. Secnars. Good results. Had a pass through, excellent exit wound, deer dropped where he stood. ( 2 Deer taken with these Bullets)

3. Berger. Really good results. No pass through with these bullets. Deer dropped where they stood. (3 Deer taken with these Bullets)

4. JLK's. Have not tried
 
Quick question to the OP.........I'm not a hunter, so please forgive me.
Are match bullets regularly used for hunting? By match, I mean target.
(Mk, Scenar (?), Sierra "Palma", Burger "target" VLD, etc.)
 
I use Barnes TSX, a bullet designed for hunting, not paper.

It's become a fad lately with those watching outdoor channel shows on ultra long range hunting, mainly using Berger bullets. Results can be erratic, that's why match bullets are best not used for hunting.

I used a 175gr Sierra match king in my .308 Muzzle velocities were around 2680 FPS. Then I went to the 6.5 X 47. I used the 123gr secnar, wish I could remember the velocity for that one, I think it was between 2700- 2800. Now I'm using 130gr Berger hunting VLD in my 6.5 and they are running 2863 fps.

Match bullets are not meant for hunting. I made a huge mistake when I used the sierra bullet. Never used them again. Like I mentioned earlier I had good luck with the secnars. I use the Berger hunting VLD, I find them excellent.
 
There are quite a few excellent mono-metal hunting bullets available with a hollow-point style from Barnes and GS Custom, while Hornady and Nosler make mono-metal bullets with polymer tips stuck in the hollow points. IMHO, the best lead core hollow-point game bullet is the Sierra HPBT Gameking, although I've abandoned them in favor of conventional pointed soft point styles when I choose traditional cup and core bullets.
 
I could see the advantage of varmint hunting with match bullets but not big game hunting. After reading the thread:

I would never consider them. Hit a bone and they just fly appart. The weight retention is way too low (that means flesh wound/ eating bullet fragments)
Now a ground hog, coyote, coon etc, fine, explosive mushrooming like a varmint grenade.

There are a good number of hollow point HUNTING bullets out there, such as the Barnes Triple Shock, the Berger VLD, Sierra Gameking (NOT the Sierra hollow point target stuff!!), and so on. There are also a lot of hunting bullets out there that are basically a hollow point with a plastic tip, such as the Nosler Ballistic Tip, Hornady SST, Nosler Accubond, Hornady Interbond, Barnes Tipped Triple Shock and so on and so forth. Stick with bullets meant for hunting big game and they will work fine. PLEASE stay away from the hollow point target bullets for use on big game! They are called target or match bullets for a reason!
