Hey CGN,

I know that the topics probably been beaten to death, but I did a search and it wasn't too conclusive. So I was wondering for a .22 with is more accurate in general, a hollow point round or a regular 22, my instincts would tell me the regular would be generally more accurate, but maybe somebody with more experience could shine some light on it for me. I was a shotgun guy, but recently got an old 22 for a price that I couldn't resist, and I have to say I like it more than I though I would. Thanks, Phil

The big difference is supersonic vs subsonic ammo, with the subsonic generally being more accurate at longer distances because it doean't have to slow past the trans-sonic zone as it slows down.

My Ruger likes winchester super speed round nose bullets......... well until I tried the winchester super speed HP's. Groups are WAY better, I bought 2500 rounds of the round nose ones as at the time the HP's were not available, go figure!

(HP bullets being a more stable type of bullet only really applies in centrefire bullets, I believe. Something about the centre of gravity being moved farther back.)

CCI MiniMags are the only rounds that are produced in RN and HP.
The HP is about 15 or 25 fps faster.
When I tested them in various rifles, their accuracy relative to a particular rifle would switch day to day.
Of the high velocity brands, their consistency is the best.

I tried many different brands and weights. chose the one that shot the best from all rifles. It ended being a HP. and then all scopes were set to the one ammo I use. Save having to search for different ammo and one kind serves all. Less to carry.

All the match-grade ammo for .22LR are solid lead. The more weight the better, as this could also prevent it from going supersonic, increase it's inertia to resist slowing down, and increase its ballistic coefficient. Those last two are directly proportional to each other. Smcx is right about the trans-sonic zone, which generally define a bullet's MPBR.

Good point CCI Standard seem to fit both the criteria for me..

I picked up a large box of federal hollow points, and they didn't shoot too bad, but I was just curious if the regular bullet would do better in a target situation. I would assume that the bullets go supersonic because they have a claimed muzzle velocity of 1260 ft/s, so I guess between supersonic hp. and regular which would be better?

An HP or solid makes no difference to accuracy. You must try as many brands as you can to find the ammo that your rifle shoots best and in the case of a semi-auto, cycles the action too.
