Why is it so hard to buy hollowpoint handgun ammunition in Canada ? As far as I know it is perfectly legal. Most gunstores don't carry it. Does anyone know of a gunstore in Southern Ontario that has hollowpoints? Thanks.

Because they are too expensive to shoot.... they don't want to stock something that won't sell....

Not enough demand. Like IM_Lugger says, jacketed bullets, of any kind, are too expensive to shoot regularly and a lot of indoor clubs don't allow them. They are most assuredly legal though.

Mostly stateside anyway, they are considered self defense rounds. Non-wilderness ATC's being the hen's teeth that they are, there is a limited market. I buy Speer Gold Dot Hollow Points and load them myself, as there is only FMJ and TMJ ammunition available locally. I'd bet the stores would be pretty pleasantly surprised at the sales they'd get if they were to carry it more.

That's ridiculous and ludicrous. WTF would an indoor club not allow the use of hollowpoints? I'd think that FMJ's have more of a tendency to ricochet than a bullet which is sure to mushroom like an atomic bomb....

Ooops, just realized that the statement was about jacketed bullets, not hollowpoints. I really should stop drinking this early in the morning....

I think stores would be surprised. I think a lot of people would buy them. Especially if they could stock some of the real high performance stuff that is available in the states. I know I would buy them. At my range we can shoot old tv's, computer monitors, pumkins, etc. etc. It would be kind of cool to see what a good hollow point could do.

Hollowpoints are more LCF than aything else. Every once in awhile it's fun to buy a box and shoot it into a box packed with paper, magazines, fibre of some sort to catch the expanded round.:)

Hollowpoints = expensive, and you lose around 100 fps in the 9mm over the FMJ.
what do you mean? A lot of the HP self defense ammo is +p or +p+ so you actually get higher velocity/energy than plane range FMJ ammo! I guess after a few hunrded yards HP will loose more fps than FMJ but it doesn't metter with handgun rounds...

The specs we were given when issued the Golden Sabre from Remington was 900 fps.

Hollowpoints only aesthetically impress the guy shooting them or showing them off. The paper doesnt know the difference, unlike your wallet...Now if we could use them for what they were designed(lets just say hunting in this case and avoid the other stuff) that would be a different story...

I think YOU would be surprised. A lot of people woulkd buy one box, find out they make absolutely no difference performance -wise on an old TV, computer monitor, and since "pumkin" ;) season is relatively short, the store would be left with a bunch of expensive ammo on the shelf.

In short, for most shooters, the novelty would wear off pretty fast.

Hollow point ammo for hand guns is legal but like alot of guys here say it is really expensive to buy for range use only. Some gun stores talk to you like a criminal when you ask about it, a store in Moncton told me they were illegal to buy and basically not to ask around for them because of that. If you want JHP rounds buy the bullets and load your own, it's cheaper in the long run if you really want to shoot them. Wolf ammo in Ont sells some JHP in varoius calibers as far as I can remember.
