Hollowpoint ammunition

Nonsense. The shape of the bullet has virtually nothing to do with velocity.

I never said that was the case. I simply stated that when the 147 grain 9mm hollow points were issued to us I noticed that the rated FPS was approximately 100 fps slower than the 147 grain FMJ that we're issued for practice. I never speculated as to the reasoning for that.

That being said I do believe that the shape of a 9mm 147 grain hollow point will have some effect on velocity. That's just simple aerodynamics. You're going to bleed of speed faster.

Well, you said:

Hollowpoints = expensive, and you lose around 100 fps in the 9mm over the FMJ.

That seems like a pretty categorical statement to me, and it is not correct. The difference in aerodynamic drag between round-nose FMJ and hollowpoint bullets does not significantly affect velocity, particularly at the short ranges that pistols are usually used at. Bullet velocity largely depends on the powder charge, barrel length, and to a lesser extent the type of rifling (polygonal rifling provides slightly higher velocity than traditional rifling due to better gas seal). The fact that your issued HP ammo is rated at 900 fps does not mean anything in and of itself. You can find 9mm FMJ rounds that are rated at 800 fps and hollow points that are 1200 fps+.

Hey just stating my observations. Do what you like with it.
We use 147 grain ammo only and it's shot out of a prohibited pistol (IE short barrel).

because they are more accurate than similar TMJ's, cost nearly the same as the TMJ's

Agreed. Lots of the IPSC guys use hollow points because they have an accuracy advantage over round nose. We've tested and proved this out over the years shooting groups at 50 yards. All things being equal, a 124 grain round nose bullet and a 124 grain hollow point will have slightly different profiles, as the weight taken out of the nose in the hollow point has to go somewhere, and that usually means a longer bearing surface to engage the rifling.

That said; the difference is small.

I've noticed that the Hollow points are more accurate as well. We often shoot our hollow points every year for qualifications. This keeps the ammo from getting too old.

I think stores would be surprised. I think a lot of people would buy them. Especially if they could stock some of the real high performance stuff that is available in the states. I know I would buy them. At my range we can shoot old tv's, computer monitors, pumkins, etc. etc. It would be kind of cool to see what a good hollow point could do.

We stock it at work and it barely moves, and when it does it goes one 20 round box at a time.

Are you talking about Gold Dot bullets or factory ammo? If it's the latter, where can I get it for the price of TMJ?

+1
Yes, Slavex, you must tell us the place where I can get gold dots for the price of TMJ, my last box of TMJ was $112 for 1000. Hell, right now I'm looking for a place to get another box of TMJ's for a similar price and not get killed on shipping, if I can get gold dots instead, I'd feel better about paying it.

john parsons of Custom Reloading Service in Maple Ridge stocks the Gold Dot hollow point bullets. not sure on the price for 1000 right now as I believe there was another price increase recently. pm him for more info, curese is his username.
