Hollowpoint ammunition

I've always been leary of reloaded ammo for defence. For plinking/target practice, sure, why not. But for ammo you're betting your life on, I dunno....

Seriously?

I've never had a problem with any of my own loads... no duds, no hang fires, no misfires, no squib loads...

I'd say that I would trust my own at least as much as factory, if not more.

A lot of the US magazines warn about liabilty using reloads for defense. I'm not sure if it holds this side of the border, guess if my gold dots in the safe are ever pressed into action, I'll find out ;)

I'd definitely stay away from using handloads for self-defence. Far as I'm concerned, I'd prolly get nailed to ther cross just for using commerical hollow-points in my home gun. From what I've read, the prosecutor will try to use anything at all to hang you.

"So, Mr Smith. You decided that the commercially-available cartridges presently on the market for your .44 Magnum weren't quite strong enuf? You found it necessary to custom-build a cartridge which would kill Mr Robber/Rapist with much more efficiency, did you?"

Or something to that effect, but what do I know...:(

"No Sir. I feared for my life and wanted to stop Mr. Robber/Rapist. Not having ever considered the concept of self-defense, I used the only ammo available to me as a target shooter, hand-loaded hollowpoint ammunition, which from a practical standpoint, just happens to be slightly more accurate than non-hollowpoint."

Actually, I would load factory JHP and should I ever have to use it against a person (I pray that I never have to), I would state that the ammunition I chose was similar to that used by the local PD for the reason that they use it to protect thier lives, so why shouldn't I?

And the crown prosecutor says...

"So, Mr Joe-NWT. You want the court to believe that although it's cheaper to shoot standard, commercially-available ammunition, you decided to pay more than double the cost of aforementioned ammo in order to trim your groups down by what, .25"? Is that what you're telling the court here today, Mr Joe-NWT.
Are you also telling us that you had no clue as to the devastation caused to the human body when these "killer bullets" impact the human body? Are you telling the court today that although you work as a dishwasher in a downtown greasy-spoon joint, have a morbidly obese wife who cannot work to help support your family of 7 (details added for flavour by Petey :D) and can barely afford your 4-1/2 apartment here in expensive Calgary, you decided that these "accurate" and expensive cartridges were the only way you were going to enjoy your shooting sessions?

Forget it Joseph, you're dead. You're swinging from the gallows as we speak. You're history. Your morbidly obese wife will move on (rather quickly, I might add:D) after you've been buried in some non-descript paupers field, meet some rich plastic surgeon from Hollywood who'll give her a gastric bypass, liposuction the crap outta her, cut away the 75 lbs or so of excess flab now hanging around her body and place your kids in private school so he doesn't have to put up with their incessant clamouring. Within a year, no one will even remember you.
No one except for your comrades over here at GunNutz :D:D. I'll never forget you, of that you can be sure....

Your honor! Listen to the prosecution! Obviously he's fixated on my wife! I would ask the court that any comments made by this Povich-watching individual be stricken from the records and that he be removed from this court immediately!:p

I have a hard time believing that Winchester White Box 9mm doesn't come just as cheap in a hollow point version. In the states, a guy can buy hollow points just as cheap as fmj or tmj ammo. I think the border has something to do with this problem. Gun shops don't want the hassle of importing cheap hollow point ammo but they are willing go through the hassle to import expensive, +p+ hollow point defense rounds because of the profit margin.

HP ammo in US is more $$ than FMJ.

Though, in my opinion, it'd make perfect sense to have a mag loaded with JHP ammo in the safe for that extreme case when you have to use your firearm to save your and/or your family lives. The perfect reason is to protect your neighbors' lives as JHP will lodge in the assailant’s body as opposed to exit and hit something behind too.

Isn't it one of the reasons police use JHP, in addition to better stopping power?

Ummm, sure. Pretty much everything you said is wrong.

Why is it so hard to buy hollowpoint handgun ammunition in Canada ? As far as I know it is perfectly legal. Most gunstores don't carry it. Does anyone know of a gunstore in Southern Ontario that has hollowpoints? Thanks.

So what? Your paper target doesn't give a sh.t if it's hollow point or Full metal jacket... but you wallet does care if it's $15 per 50 or $28 per 50....

That's all...

I have 2x cases of WW Ranger 147gr SXT,1 case of Federal 147gr HydroShock and 1 Case Reminton 147gr Golden Sabres got them for a good deal so good I couldn't pass on it

i have non-restricted rifles in pistol calibers including 9mm and I hunt with them so yes the hollow point is different from the fmj. If I only shot paper then I wouldn't care.
