I am a newb in these waters and just wondering what is the advantage/disadvantage of one over the other? Is it just preference?

Take eotech holo vs aimpoint reddot so we are comparing higher end examples. As far as I know, neither magnify the target, so is it just preference or is there a real advantage to one over the other. Specifically let's say both in combat and plinking.

Thanks!

They're completely different technologies. Some people can't use the Eotechs because the hologram screws with their eyes (especially if you have astigmatism), however if you got great eyes, they're likely great little optics with their nice tight 1 moa inner dot. Granted, Eotech's have been known to fail when under rough useage. The aimpoint on the other hand has a larger dot (2 and 4 moa versions), but is much tougher than the Eotech and has a far longer battery life, granted, it's a bit bulkier looking. Honestly, YMMV. If you can, try each of them out before you decide to purchase.

Eotechs are a fine piece less the lack of magnification, great for day ops and night. use NVG's with pak 2 for pin point engagements at night and also turn down brightness on EOTECH. I ran with a detachable iron sight and combined it with eotech on rail for all operations.

From what I've heard, most Eotech "problems" are related to the battery placement. Rough handling causes the batteries to "slosh" back and forth, causing broken connections at the terminals. Easy fix, I would assume...

Try them in winter as well

I have not experienced myself but I have seen 2 different guys on the range during the day in the winter, and in the sun the Aimpoint washed out. I have never had this problem with an Eotech or Holosight. Maybe newer ones are better?
