The solar powered unit with the flip caps will auto shutoff from battery mode and go into solar standby. It sounds like it will automatically switch to the battery if there is not enough light hitting the solar panel. If you put your gun into a safe or case one would assume it would be too dark for solar so after the 12 hour period when the battery shuts off and the unit is forced into solar only what's to keep the battery from coming back on in the absence of light? I'd guess there is still a motion detection sensor involved to keep the unit in solar while in a case and not in use.
