I've had several Holosuns and they are fantastic for the price. They have endured far more abuse from my use than most people will ever put their guns through. I've had 2 fail though. One would only work in solar mode and one just wouldn't turn on. I think the old system with the battery held into the bottom with the mount and the battery covered by a rubber flap is weak. I wouldn't use that model.
When i contacted Holosun they were quick to respond and replaced the units, despite being past their 2 year warranty period.
It's important that I note that despite the failures, I still think they have a very good product in their price range, especially as few shooters are going to use them as much as mine get used. Red dots I've also killed- 1 Vortex Sparc, 1 Vortex Spitfire, 1 Bushnell TR-25, 1 Bushnell Firstrike, 1 Burris Fastfire. I've also killed lots of optics from companies like Leupold, Swarovski, Ziess, Leica, Bushnell etc.
So even though I've had failures with Holosun, they took a long time and took tens of thousands of rounds, and were used in baking hot, freezing cold, heavy rain and certainly weren't given the velvet glove treatment in transport or use. I'd never get another Bushnell TR-25 now, and lots of people praise them on CGN. I've had them fail quickly and they eat batteries, especially compared to the Holosuns.
I just bought a new Holosun 510C and I'm interested in seeing how it works out. It sure looks sturdy and it's nice to look through.
My thoughts on red dot style optics in general are this...If you are going to be shooting lots, entering competitions, using them in rough conditions often- spend the money and get the best ones. If you aren't, then look at one of the more affordable but good ones, like Vortex and Holosun.
Avoid the really cheap ones entirely.
