Holster advice requested

Hey guys - I have owned my Sig P226 for years and only put a few hundred rounds through it. I decided I would like to start training myself a bit more in overall use from drawing to shooting, rather than just putting up targets and shooting them. It will still remain a personal hobby, and I have no intention of gearing myself up for competition.

I am interested in getting a dropleg holster, although I do not need the best and newest piece on the market. That being said, cost is also not really a factor although I would like to keep it within $100-150 if possible.

I would love to hear some recommendations from the community as to what recommendations there are for me, and also where I could find such holsters.

I was looking at Blackhawk Serpa as well Heimdall. I think they are the front runner right now.

John - thanks I will check out Solely Canadian. One of the big issues for me is finding retailers for these holsters. Cabela's seems to have a very small selection unless I am navigating their website wrong.
 
I can't seem to get the Solely Canadian site to load well. Perhaps because I am on a tablet?

I'm really interested in Blackhawk Serpa holsters. Can anyone tell me what dealers sell them? I'm not having much look finding them

Still happy to take any other suggestions if anyone has them.

Are you holster qualified? If not, I suggest taking a Black Badge course at your local club. Your (and our) safety comes first.

That being said, there's Bladetech for simple, functional and reliable.

But if you want "tactical", then yes, Serpa is an option, but watch that finger!

Personally, I prefer Solely Canadian (for IDPA) or Safariland for 3gun and everything else (can move from belt to leg shroud easily and the retention system is superior to SERPA)
 
Hi Mel - no I can't say I have ever heard of a holster qualification but I do have experience them in my occupation. The one I have though is a cheap thing I bought overseas that served its purpose for my issued browning that sat there most of the time.

I have looked at Bladetech but they all appear to be hip holsters unless I am mistaken.

Do you know any companies in Canada that sell Bladetech or Blackhawk equipment?
 
X2 for Soleley Canadian, or Bladetech as a back up.

Many ranges won't allow Serpa holsters as user error can result in negligent discharges during the draw stroke as a result of the retention design.
 
Ctcsupplies is a site sponsor and sells Bladetch. If you get the TMMS system it allows you to switch between a belt mount or a thigh rig. It will also mount on any MOLLE compatible system. Bladetech does make a drop leg system, but they're hard to find in Canada.
 
Thanks Eagle - I will look into that as well!

Quality drop leg holsters seem hard to obtain...I am starting to wonder if I am pidgeon holing myself by looking only for that type of system...

I will say no to the LCF for the drop leg. When I was overseas I purchased a drop leg to replace my crappy issued holster and it is what I am currently comfortable wearing, although I suppose when I am thinking about a pistol holster I am also naturally thinking about it interfering with my body armour which I guess is not a problem I need to worry about anymore...I guess I am just leaning towards it because it is what I know. Also, I feel like a hip holster would just sit too high up on me for my liking (in my mind it feels like it would make an awkward draw as I am used to having one on my leg, so a bit more of a reach). However, that statement is based on pure speculation as I have never worn one on the hip.

I appreciate the advice and maybe I will do a bit more research into hip holsters. I guess I just never really pictured myself wearing one because I have only ever used the latter. Might have to look into Black Badge as well for some training.

I think I am getting more questions out of this then answers, but am very happy for that. Once all these questions (and inward reflection) are complete I should be pretty rock solid on my choice!

For the price, solely Canadian holsters are very good.
I had a serpa and it was all right, you just have to cognizant of where your trigger finger is when drawing. I personally would not buy it again because of that.
Unless you have long arms or are worried about it catching on body armour I think the drop leg is not needed, a good hip holster is all you need.
One of the things to spend your money on is the belt, a good wide stiff belt is a must have.
I would start with a plain, simple waist band holster. You can get good quality ones for 50 bucks, less if you look around. I would say it must be leather or kydex (sp? Correct spelling escapes at this moment). Stay away from those uncle mikes holsters.
 
The reason I like the Bladetech gear is because of the TMMS quick connect and tek-lok system. It allows you to go from a belt holster, to drop leg, to vest carry, to thigh rig in seconds. I have many handguns of different makes, so I can swap out my mags holders and holsters onto my belt by just removing the ones on the belt, sliding the new ones onto the TMMS outers attached to a vest, thigh rig, belt or whatever. Here's what I use on my competition rigs, it does get pricey but well worth it in my opinion.

Whenever I used drop leg I hated the fact that the gun jumps around when I ran. I was always tightening the elastic retainers but wasn't satisfied with the fit. I had Blade tech, IWI and others too.

I am using leather swivel holsters now and they're fantastic. Not Canadian made but very practical. Low enough not to interfere with the combat vest or armor. Perfect to reach and faster than a hip holster. Held in place by strong leather lace, doesn't flop around and most important not restrictive. I got them made by AE Nelson Leather, and they even accommodated for the weapon lights. Got one for the USP and one for the Sig 229 which also fits the Sig Pro. I am extremely happy. Oh BTW leather wouldn't wear the finish on your piece.

Wow - just watched the videos on the Blade Tech systems. Very cool. I see that getting more intimate with my pistol might be a bit harder on the bank account than originally anticipated lol.

They have very cool gear!
