For pistol skill improvement. I'm going to be doing some holster, shooting, reloading, and moving practice with a skilled mentor. I have a Blackhawk holster, a hard leather holster, and a drop leg holster. I figured I would ask here, what holster would you guru types use to conceal carry a S&W M&P40? I'd like to practice with different types of carry. The three I have now all hae different methods to hold the gun in. With the Blackhawk having a lock tab you press to draw, the leather one holds by friction and the drop leg has a thumb strap release. They also all stick out like dogs balls when using them.

Raven - they have multiple methods of attaching to the belt, so with one holster and some cheap attachments you can run a belt holster, pancake OWB and IWB. The quality is first class.

Crossbreed super tuck ....... The BEST conceal carry holster, and amazingly comfortable to wear for extended periods of time

using your suggested keywords, i found this video, h ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvc_Ixc8cIA PHLster, was compared with the raven, so i started watching videos.

that raven is definitely interesting. never even seen something like that before.

If the drop leg is one that puts the gun down on the lower thigh then it's not a fast draw holster you can use in a lot of the match events. 3gun being one notable exception.

The fact that you're worried about how much they stick out suggests that you're looking at IDPA. If so download and read up the rule book. In particular the appendix at the rear that has pictures and notes on how to test for an acceptable holster fit. For IPSC it can stick out all you wish.

I had a Blackhawk for a Beretta I had. With the right modification to the belt clip it worked and fit well enough to use it in IDPA. Perhaps check and see if there's any spacers you can remove. I can't tell you what I did since that was 3 years or so back and the gun and holster has been gone for about 6 months now.

I figured if I'm going to shoot for fun I may as well become more proficient and practice using different types of carry. I don't know if next spring if I'm going to shoot ipsc or idpa. Our range is outdoors but I have a plow and there is a snowblower there. I also will start practicing off handed shooting as I've never done it before. The drop leg one can be adjusted do it's below the pocket or so the gun is right below the belt. I have the ipsc rules, I get the idpa ones as well. Good idea.

Probably the best all around rig is a Blade Tech dropped and offset holster. Works good for IPSC and 3gun the way it comes and for IDPA if you remove the drop attachment.

No holster with a button or lock tab is made for speed or concealment. No need to worry about concealed carry in Canada anyway. However, like everything else, what kit you buy/use depends on what you're doing. And you will not likely be using a holster on any club's range without having an IPSC/IDPA Black Badge.
Any holster I've made is leather and wet formed. Pistol is held by friction only. There are such things as minimum leather holsters and gamers holsters. Having a budget in mind helps too.

Many ranges don't require ipsc black badge certification. And there isn't an "idpa black badge". And yes, there are push button holsters that are used for concealment, they just aren't inside the waistband types.

I was using a holster all afternoon without anyone complaining yesterday. Send me a price on an IWB friction holster in black, for a S&W M&P 40.

No IDPA or IPSC qualifications. Although I was shooting one on one with an IDPA/IPSC qualified RO. Had a blast practicing, firing and moving, holster drills, reload drills. I do wish i had the ability to try a few different holsters, but the leather OWB one i have worked great. The blackhawk only fits on the hip, the leather one allowed me to practice hip drills and appendix drills.

I have not used a drop leg, but see them in use in CQB matches. They appear to be problematic.

I use Fobus and uncle Mike's Kydex holsters. Prefer the latter. They are cheap and they work. The model with the belt loops can be threaded to be tight to the body or to stick the gun out a bit, depending on the match requirements.

buy canadian from a company that supports the shooting sports.... soley canadian holsters, available at cowboy tactical supply or pm rollie100 for custom colours and options.
