Hello all!

I'm looking for more information about reasonable choices for someone's first holster/belt/mag storage rig. The primary purpose for me is IPSC, but given the availability of clubs in the area IDPA is also a possibility. Is it possible or reasonable to have the same gear for both disciplines?

I'm shooting a Glock 17, and it seems like Uncle Mike's kydex holsters are well recommended. I'm assuming that's with a belt loop rather than a paddle. CZ shadow owners seem to recommend a bladetech. Are bladetech's suitable for the Glock as well? And are either of these prohibited in IDPA?

I have no idea about what belts or mag pouches to use, when asking for information people generally recommend a holster and stop there. Any suggestions or explanations would be well received! :) Once again I'm hoping to have a rig that is suitable for both IPSC and IDPA, but if this isn't possible I'm sure someone will let me know right quick.

Thanks very much!

Thanks for the links Wendell, the Uncle Mike's holster is mentioned by name as being prohibited for IDPA, and it suggests that the Bladetech is as well. I'll check out the two you suggested as soon as I finish reading the relevant parts of the rule book.

That is not 100% true, you can use the Uncle Mikes if it has the paddle attachment. The new Uncle Mikes kydex holsters come with it, last one I bough up at Epps was like $18. Also Tac Pro is a good option, Canadian made.

The thing that prohibits them is if they are too far from the body, and the like, such as belt channel etc. etc..

The Uncle Mikes with their belt loop would not be O.K. for the above reasons for IDPA, with the paddle or if you change to a closer mount for the belt like a blade tech tek-lok, it would be fine. IDPA will not allow the DOH option that some blade techs come with, easy enough to order one without or to take it off. The DOH option is allowed for IPSC so, may as well have the piece and not use it, then want it and not have it. I recommend blade tech as well. They will serve you well for your Glock 17. I know Williams Arms has a nice Uncle Mikes with a blade tech tek-lok belt attachment since I just gave him one when I traded my Glock 17, so jump on it. Blade Tech or Uncle Mikes will work well for Mag Pouches. I suggest the single mag pouches for proper finger indexing. The CR Speed ones at $40.00 each are also very good but I believe these will only work on a CR Speed belt. I don't think the CR Speed belt is allowed in IDPA though, but I may be mistaken since the inner part does go through the belt loops.

I'm also new to IPSC and about to take the Black Badge. Do not take this as advice, just as one data point from someone else considering both IPSC and IDPA. I went with something that seems to be ok for both, but not lightning fast for IPSC: Blackhawk Serpa holster and Blackhawk double stack mag pouches on a Calde Ridge double belt all from one of the CGN sponsors: DS Tactical.

The double belt allows you to thread a small belt into your pants with ease, then add the larger outer belt over the belt loops - it attaches firmly with Velco. This allows you to easily add all your gear to the bigger belt, adjusting it until you get it just right. Then you can "attach it" to the smaller belt on whatever pants/shorts you are wearing, making the two belts become one. Make sure to leave enough surface area exposed on the small belt and keep both relatively snug to your waist to avoid slippage.

The Serpa holster is very reassuring with its lock. It is very easy to unlock without any worry of your trigger finger sliding into the trigger area. It is also adjustable so you can angle it a bit forward or backward as your draw style requires.

The mag pouches are... mag pouches. No magic. No big deal. Retains the magazine quite well.

Others here will gives you the correct Pro's and Con's of this post. This is a data point from someone in the same boat. Good luck brother.

shootersgear.net has great double belts. I have one and highly reccomend them. george is a great guy to deal with. and Comptac is 100% quality gear I love my holster from them. And i haven't ordered any yet, but i will order some mag pouches from them. right now i've got 1 uncle mikes dual doublesatck kydex and a custom leather 4 mag holder i got off the EE both work very well and i really like them.

basicaly get the best you can afford and you won't be disapointed.

But... before you buy one of the double belts, like the CR Speed and others mentioned, you should read and see if they are allowed for IDPA. IDPA pretty much says if the gear is strictly for competition, then it is a no go. You wouldn't wear one of these belts for normal concealed carry, so that's why I am thinking it is probably a no go. But for IPSC... they are the cats meow, the bees knees.

Good point Tuco Pike. I plan to use the inner belt for IDPA, with a slight adjustment to my holster to tighten the fit. The Blackhawk holster's belt loop attachment has adjustable loop channels so you can snug it up.

The double velcro CR Speed belts are a no go for IDPA...although I suppose you could just wear the 'loop' inner without the outer 'hook' portion.

I use a CR Speed for IPSC and just a reinforced riggers belt for IDPA...although a riggers belt works fine for IPSC too.

You do not need the Serpa holster, get the Blackhawk CQC, same holster without the Serpa in it, works just as good maybe even better for doing what you want to and for the price difference you can get the mag pouches. I use the CQC for my 1911's and my Sigs.

If you want a good "IDPA" belt, check out Center-of-mass holsters.

Rick (the owner) shoots USPSA and IDPA. He is producing a line of nylon fabric coated hard plastic belts. These are similar to the IPSC outer belt with a buckle.

These are fantastic belts and I wear mine almost every day (it looks like a Tumi belt that I have). Very stiff and durable.

I like my Blade Tech holsters. I use CR Speed Belt and CR Speed Versa Pouches for IPSC. But one just getting into the sports, both IDPA and IPSC, would do well with a Blade Tech Holster, Uncle Mikes Mag Pouches and a good, wide and stiff Leather Belt, or riggers belt, as others have pointed out.
