I am new to the Pistol Scene. I have purchased a 1911 Colt Commander. I was also at a local gun shop and picked up a Uncle Mike's holster for this firearm; I kind of want to try out the IPSC and IDPA shoots. I keep seeing posts about various styles of holsters, and am quite baffled by what is required or needed in the two aforementioned disciplines. Can someone give me a run down of various styles, paddle, belt etc. as well as there usefulness for these particular disciplines, and also what is nescesary and "Legal" for these types of events. I do know that the BLack Badge is required for IPSC, but what is the nescesary hoslter requirements?

Thanks in Advance

I see that I may have posted this in the wrong section, it maybe should have went in the action shooting sports section. OOOOPPPPSSSSS my bad.

What kind of Uncle Mike's did you purchase? If it is one of the generic nylon holsters it should be usable in both IPSC and IDPA. You won't win any style points with it, but it'll get the job done. If it's the Uncle Mike's Kydex holster, then it's allowed in IPSC, but probably not in IDPA since the gap between the body and the holster is too great.

Belt holsters generally have loops that your belt feeds through to keep it attached. It is necessary to undo your belt to put the holster on.

Paddle holsters have a paddle that fits between your body and your belt. These holsters can slip on an off without undoing your belt.

Requirement for holsters can be found in the respective rulebooks at the IPSC and IDPA websites.

Personally, for my M&P I use a Bladetech paddle holster. As long as my belt is tight I won't pull my holster off during my draw ;) I use it in both IPSC and IDPA with no problems.
