Holster?

eBay. i won't tell you what i use since others hate the brand and view it as worthless crap, but a Blackhawk CQC Serpa can be had for reasonable prices and it's apparently quite good. if i was keeping my 1911, i'd get the Serpa (but not the Sportster since it doesn't use a button to lock the gun in place)

do you want leather, kydex or injection molded plastic? Personally, I like kydex for a holster and Blade-tech makes some of the best. blade-tech.com. You can order direct from Blade-tech or try 911 Supply in Calgary; they carry a lot of Blade-tech stuff.

Pretty much any holster designed for a full-sized 1911 will fit your Spartan.

Penner Custom Leather makes quality holsters at a reasonable price and quick delivery.

Ah yes, the age old question... Leather can hold moisture, is hard to clean if it gets dirty or muddy (especially the inside of a holster) and can cause holster wear marks on a gun. Kydex and plastic are easy to clean and maintain, easy to keep dry but don't look as nice as leather can can also cause a bit of holster wear...

Are you at all planning on shooting say IDPA?
Kydex holsters allow for tension adjastment and are way faster to draw from. Much easier to keep clean too.
BladeTech has IDPA pack you can get, it comes with holster, double mag pouch (adj for tension) and puddle attacment you can put on either hoslter or mag puch, thou both come with belt loops too. There is practically no wear for Kydex and they'll last more than lifetime.

Well I dont know which is better? I plan to keep my gun for a long time. I dont want anything that could damage it.

Kydex:

Horsehide is what you really should be looking at.

Pretty ringing endorsement for kydex there...but to give some perspective:

1) practically no wear

Tom Fineis (of Raven Concealment Systems) said:
Kydex holsters, over time, generally wear a firearm less than leather. However, they typically start to wear the gun right from the get go, then break in a bit and the wear will stop at a certain point.

What is happening is the pistol and holster are breaking in, 'mating' to each other a bit if you will. Once they have been used together for a while, the wear typically stops and doesn't get much worse

2) last more than a lifetime

Todd Green (of Pistol-Training.com said:
Leather is more durable. While kydex is very hard, it is also brittle and if torqued the wrong way can crack. A quality leather holster can easily last a lifetime of hard use. Kydex holsters, over time, tend to break down. On the other hand, kydex is pretty much impervious to a lot of environmental challenges that wreck leather. Leather also absorbs water, so a wet leather holster is going to subject your gun to possible corrosion significantly more than a wet kydex holster.

I could go on but the point I am trying to make is that there is not a clear winner between kydex and leather. What IS true is that for the money, you can get better quality kydex than you can leather.

That's why I asked if he was gonna use it for sport shooting like IDPA.
For sports - Kydex IS the ticket.
For CCW, which we can't do, especially daily and in warmer weather - well broken in leather is the ticket. But if any holster is subjected to everyday use in all kinds of conditions, it'll get worn, broken, scratched up, discolored and so on.
Very much depends on the purpose, shooting vs collecting vs I'm_not_sure.

i use plastic / composite (and i'd lump kydex into that group) cuz the fit is secure and both draw and reholster are very direct. affordable, but usually gun-specific (even to the point that there's separate holsters for rail / no-rail guns)

never used leather, so no comment, but i'd assume $$$

hate hate HATE nylon. cheapest of the bunch, will easily handle a wide variety, might be gentle on the finish UNTIL you get sand particles stuck in the material, but reholstering is a PITA cuz the damned thing collapses on itself (unless it's reinforced with a skeleton / shell of some kind) and i find that they tend to cover too much of the grip to give you positive feedback on when / how you're grabbing your gun to draw

Fobus? :p

Not sure if this guy ships to Canada but somewhere I saw a recommendation for wildbillsconcealment.com. Quite reasonable price-wise.
Marstar lists holsters from Triple-K but they're usually out of stock :(

it works, it's affordable, and it's easy to buy. ya, i know, it doesn't say Elite Tactical Night Elf Pro Turbo 2 Max Fusion, but hey if it works it works. there's other options out there for those who have a stigma :p and the BH CQC Serpa is quite affordable too (though i've not used one yet)

Hey I own one. Tight as a vice and wreaks havoc on your gun's finish! Keep it as backup now. I seen one of the newer ones and they have come a long way.

what newer ones? i've got the Evolution series (with the holes and adjustable screw) - is that what you're referring to? i've never used the originals, so maybe that's where a lot of the disparity and dislike comes from. i know that the one for my 1911 needed to get adjusted quite "loose" before it was good, but the ones for the Glock and Ruger only needed a minor tweak.

Bingo!

And c'mon guys (you know who you are ;)).... let's not derail yet another thread with the Fobus "debate"...

i'm impartial to brands :) i own what i own due to cost & function, not the sticker that's on it. my only "brand loyalty" is for my computer's operating system (Ubuntu) and perhaps gasoline (Shell). the rest is whatever does the job for a fair price.

besides, the CQC looks mighty interesting and doesn't cost a lot either. if / when one of mine breaks, or i decide that i want to get a belt holster, i'm sure i'll try the CQC. only reason i don't have a CQC right now is that whatever i do have is fully functional and suitable for the task.

but i'll easily say that nylon sucks, no matter who makes it. i wasted $20 on a Pro-Tech or whatever the hell that brand is, on a floppy inaccessible holster. don't even know where it is right now, but i'm sure some newbie can borrow it whenever.

what WOULD be nice, though, is more choices for kydex / composite / plastic IWB holsters. ideas? leads?

+2 for Penner - he makes great stuff.

The choice is yours - what are you looking for. I've got both black and brown leather holsters and love 'em...NOTHING to me is nicer. If you're into IDPA, or IPSC then yeah, kydex probably but don't let that fool you into thinking you'll be fast. I know some guys pretty damn fast out of the leather....
