I was given a REALLY nice drop leg holster with belt a few weeks ago. It fits my M&P9 plus 1 mag....it fits really nice and holds the gun well, is tight but comfortable on my leg. My only thought is am I gonna be able to use this? I donno if ranges let you draw and fire from a holster? I have no plans to shoto IPSC? or w/e anytime soon but am I able to use this just for fun?

My club has some events where we move around from stage to stage. The guns are not shot from a holster draw but drawn, loaded, shot, cleared and re-holstered when confirmed empty and cleared by the RO looking over us. Sort of IPSC/IDPA'ish if you will. Some of us just carry them from stage to stage but that soon becomes a bit of a pain to put them in the safe area then move them. I soon became one of the converted and use holsters like the others. But I'm sure the thoughts and rules on this vary from club to club so be sure to check first. It may not be something you use often but for those times when it would be an advantage at least you have one.

You should look into the handgun events in your area. I just started with a few club level matches last year as well as the monthly club Speed Steel matches. They really are great fun if you don't get all competitive on yourself. And your M&P is a great pistol for basic Production class in either IPSC or IDPA. Target shooting is fine but nothing gets the juices flowing like trying to hit the targets in a decently short time.

Depends on your range. Some let you do what you want without much restriction, some require a holster course and then turn you loose and some limit any holster activity to IDPA/IPSC type shooting and nothing else.

My range has no limits on holster use or carry beyond no loaded guns away from the line. Unless you are on an active line, you must have no mag in the gun and hammer down on an empty chamber. There are lots of IDPA shooters there and you see guys walking around with holstered pistols everywhere.

I was wondering the same thing. I quite often shoot alone at our range as I'm retired and most members work. We have a whole lot of black bear in our neighbourhood and at this time of year bruno is just wakening up and is pretty hungry. I most of the time bring my Winchester .3030 and keep it handy but when walking up to change targets I would like to holster a .45 or my DE .357 just in case and to make me more comfortable with the fact I cant run anymore though I'd probably make a good attempt if confronted.
