I received a most awesome Christmas present from my father today!

A Smith and Wesson 422 pistol:

I have a small stash of CCI Stingers, MiniMags, and a few Federal Gold Medal that my MKIII loves, and cannot wait to take her to the range!

Anybody have any first-hand reports on the types of ammo these like (for when my small stash is gone), and possibly where to get a new set of grips?
(the stock grips are fine, and in decent shape; looking for something with a thumbrest like the OE target models)

nice nice!

ive got the exact same but with the shorter barrel and my father gave me his silver one last summer.
they are really fun little 22's!

i started my daughters shooting pistols on these.
perfect for them, so light and shoot nice.

as for the grips i cant help ya, i run the stock wood on both of mine.
i did look for some a couple years back and all i could find was the generic gripall from Hogue but that didnt work for these because the mag release is on the front and covered by the gripall.

I've owned at least ONE of these for the last 15 years. One of the most underrated pistols ever. They are as accurate as you can be. It's one of those pistols that is easy to strip and clean, and the lower shooting axis with the lower barrel really helps keep it from being too jumpy in the hands. Aftermarket parts pretty much don't exist. (other than replacement springs , etc)

yup, mine ran on EVERY SINGLE box of ammo I have ever seen . (I have used at least 20 different kinds of ammo and never any problems. The light slide will start to hang up eventually due to dirt, so keep it clean every 200-300 rounds. Easy to do at the range. Bring a bottle of brake cleaner, a bore snake and you are golden.

Nice Gift!

Depends on what you want to do with the pistol. Serious competition shooting? You should outgrow the 422 inside of a year. If you can find a used Walther GSP for target competition, or a new one, but the cost on those is prohibitive...
As a newby gun, the 422 is fine. You can learn trigger control, stance, grip, sight picture, breathing, etc., using this pistol.
If you want to shoot for a bit more accuracy, use standard velocity ammo - CCI Blazer, CCI Standard Velocity, Winchester T22 (30 years ago I had a case of T22 that shot like a hot darn out of a SW Model 41, but later batches didn't do so well). and if you want competition, CCI Green Tag, Ely Club, or some of the Fiocci or German stuff. They should all shoot OK.
I'd suggest that the higher velocity and hollow point stuff might beat the gun up a little.

Nice gift a keeper for sure I had a 2206 I sold to my nephew a year ago, Ya think the little #### would sell it back They are a fine gun and fun to shoot and light, Congrats
