I really like my deer specific hand load after 4 seasons of use. I'm glad to share the recipe.

Caliber: 308 Win.
Bullet: Barnes TTSX .308 130GR
Case: PPU Brass
Primer: CCI Large Rifle
Powder: Varget
Powder Charge: 49.2GR max charge as far as I'm concerned
COAL: 2.810
Rifle: Sako 85 Black Bear
Barrel: 20 Inches medium contour
Estimated Velocity: 2950fps
Accuracy: 1MOA average
Results: Deer devastation, you won't ever recover a bullet on deer promised regardless of the shot angle. I'm curious to know what it would do to a moose one day!

Fun fact, the hornady .308 130GR SoftPoint (catalog number 3020) hits to same point of impact as the barnes TTSX and makes for a great varmint bullet without having to resight the scope! I use a shorter COAL though at 2.710 and once fired winchester brass for those.

I stick to 165gn bonded bullets to avoid the devistation. Down is good enough, I intend to eat it.

Sierra 165 Gr. Game King on top of H380 gives me sub minute of angle groups out of my M77 Ruger, knocks down deer very nicely indeed, and has put a lot of meat on the table over the years. My Mod.100 Winchester likes 150 Gr. Hornady flat base soft point on top of 45 Gr. of Accurate 2495. I'm going to try the 150 Gr. out of my new (to me) Mossberg and if they perform well, I go hunting this year with the same ammo for both rifles. Makes for neat logistics.

I don't think you're factoring in how the bullet stays together. It sounds to me like you're imagining a 130GR fragmenting round. Also it doesn't spread lead fragments everywhere, the end result is actually less meat wasted.
