Home defense guns

Im assuming you live in Canada... So there is no such thing as a home defense gun. That being said - I think the less "scary" looking gun would be the way to go. You don't want to look like the gun crazy when the police/media get ahold of the news a gun was used for defense. Nothing black - probably something camo dipped that could give more the image of the heroic hunter who happened to save his family from the bad guy.
Maybe a old rusty hammer gun...
Well... I know people who had a bear break into there home. It destroyed the kitchen and scared the wife up stairs as the husband was away buying some lumber. The bear broke in through an open window. It took the police 1 hour to get there. It took the neighbor with a 12ga 1 minute. Do you have anyone closer to call is what the 911 operator did. Since they're are farms in the area the neighbor walked across the street with a loaded gun said it's just a black bear cub inside eating the food and the momma bear is out side scratching on the door trying to get the cub out. She taught her cub how to break into cars ect so it got moved into that area and now it broke into a house so when conservation officers showed up they shot the bear they released the bear the same day it broke into the house. There was never problems with bears until they started dumping them at the end of the road and they would cause problems with the farmers and people that live in that area. It's not always a person that breaks into your home so I would pick a 12 ga loaded with slugs or buckshot for the bear

if anything where to happend and i magicly had a fire arm acsessable a 12ga would be my first choice. people who think its harder to miss with a shotgun should pattern one at teh kinds of distances you would see inside a dwelling... the only reason i would consider a 12 ga better than a rifle or handgun is the lack of penatration, any full metal jacket bullet could go through a wall through a nother wall and possibly injure some one next door (more thinking 7.63x39 or 7.62x51 never seen penatration of 9mm and never really tested .223) buck shot in my mind at least is going to have far less puch and i dont think it would go through 2 exterior walls

I have a home audio system with speakers in every room and the sound of an 870 pump can be played from the touch of a button - don't even have to get out of bed!
Have to agree with you 100% unfortunately. Unaltered grandpa's old wingmaster would be looked at differently in court for sure vs a true home defense shotgun. But after being charged for using a garden rake guns are my last defense now in Canada but still 1st in the US.
For others wanting a similar solution, a Sentry Quick Access Pistol Safe from Costco is about $90 delivered...it electronically opens quietly in about 2 seconds
It is perfectly legal to store Loaded mags in the same 'safe'. There is room in the Sentry for a 1911 and a couple of mags no problem. It can be bolted down anywhere you want to have it handy.
edit: should also mention it weighs about 14 lbs and will accommodate a combo trigger lock so you can use it for transport purposes if you choose.

An old mod12 with a poly choke in the safe, #4 birdshot nearby. At point blank range its like a big safety slug, and no overpenetration worries. Important in case I have a bear in my apartment in the south end of oshawa.
