Hello folks,
I've recently started to load for my 4570 govt and I'm going to try to put together a bullet lube recipe from one of Paul Matthews books on black powder cartridge loading. I need to locate some yellow beeswax and am at a loss as to where to purchase this. Does anyone have any leads in the Edmonton area?
Thanks in advance,
Guy

My wife picks me up beezwax at those crafty stores she goes to. Its yellow and works like a charm as mentioned in a 50/50 mix with crisco. I also add a table spoon of wonder lube from my muzzle loaders. It makes it smell better and I don't get in trouble for cooking it on the stove LOL

I think Crisco is a vegetable oil while SPG and Paul Mathews both us animal fat/oil plus bees wax. I make my own lube for black powder cartridges out of bear grease and bees wax but I am sure that lard would work just as well as bear grease

shortening not oil it works well there is a shortage of usable animal fat in this house you dont get much off a whitetail unless you do your own hide scraping

try johnson floor paste (yellow) excellent results with tumble lube casting,or single groove, a dab of alox is optional..

I will buy beeswax candles at the local LIq. World discount store, and the Sally Anne store.
We also have bee keepers here who will sell 10 kg of beeswax for a reasonable price.

I mix a black powder lube using Murphies oil, lanolin, and beeswax. I will buy linen from the local fabric store ( the ladies look at me when I pull the micrometer out of its case and measure thickness).
And I will soak the linen in the mix when it is molten. I have a cold weather mix - (more murhpies oil), a warm weather mix, (Less murphies oil), and a revolver mix (less wax, more lanolin, and more murphies oil that gets put into some old coglins mustard tubes. Works great to squirt a dab of lube over the ball on a cap and ball revolver.

I will carry my patches in a zip lock back in a shirt pocket so the lube stays pliable.

Lube in a muzzle loader serves several purposes. The first is to provide a stronger patch and a good bearing surface to keep the round ball set in the rifling. On a minine or real bullet the lube itself acts as a bearing surface.
A good lube will also "soften" black powder fouling - making it easier to wipe off .
A lube containing a soap component allows one to run a wet patch ( windex, or windshield washer fluid in winter) down the bore and take out more fouling quicker. This also helps when you get home and clean the gun.

Some black powders tend to foul less than others. Pyrodex leaves less fouling but the fouling it does leave is perchlorate based and is more corrosive. It also takes a little more care and energy in cleaning.
I have used the various black powder substitutes but prefer to use black powder. I miss the C.I.L and Curtis and Harvey black powders. And brands other than GOEX are difficult to find locally.

Try your local farmers market. I picked up 2 lbs for $6.00.

Before my dad received my beeswax he used toilet wax seals.....not 100% pure bees wax I'm sure but that's what went into his lube.

Now he just buys SPG however as none of the homemade stuff work quite as well.

I've got piles of lube ingredients in the gunroom. Half I haven't even tried using yet including a couple gallons of lube for assembling water mains.

Just decided that its more trouble than its worth and ordered some from Dragon lube. See phishroy's ads in the EE. Looks like good stuff and I can't wait to load some 6p to try.

Look on Kijjiji, or direct from an Apiary - those other places are retail with a big markup.

There are literally 1000's of lube recipes, with their "inventors" treating them like a religion. Anything that is slippery and will stick works. Beeswax has both, but can be improved with various additives. I suggest you just use the "NRA" recipe.

Just google search "beeswax canada"

You'll find several bulk retailers at the top.

If you can find a local bee keeper that will give you a couple pounds of capping, you can just clean it yourself. Iraqveteran8888 has a youtube on it, but there are many others.

Buying it at a specialty craft store will be ridonculously expensive and not worth it.

Edit: also, castboolits.gunloads.com has a forum dedicated to lube recipes. There's lots.

Lard can be bought in the store in 1lb blocks just like Crisco. You can also buy suet which is ground up beef fat

Crisco is an excellent lube when mixed with beeswax and murphies oil..
I use straight Crisco over the balls in cap and ball revolvers. When I used a reduced b.p. charge with cornmeal filler and crisco over the ball, one guy told me "It smells like breakfast in hell..."

I just finished making 8lbs of "Emmert's Lube" Here's the receipe:
50% Beeswax
40% WHite Crisco shortning
5% Crisco or Wesson oil
5% Anhydrous lanolin
Melt over very low heat. Don't allow the mix to smoke. Looks and feels like SPG. The original Emmert's did without the lanolin and upped the oil component to 10%.
Rumour has it that Steve Garby uses mutton tallow instead of Crisco.
I make mine into sticks to feed my Lyman 450's
For those who like SPG, Buffalo Arms carry a lube called DGL for half the price of SPG. Again, looks and feels like SPG.

Holy crap! one lb cost me $26.99 at Michaels! Actually 40% less as I had a coupon. But still way overpriced compared to what you paid!!
I'll check out the farmer's market on 82nd ave
