Home Made Chrony Diffusers, ideas?

I'm thinking of putting something together to make my own diffuser for my chrony as the little slot things really don't seem to work very well.

i'm thinking of making a larger cover that will go over the entire device, just just narrow bands over the receivers.

I'm contemplating something as simple as cardboard, but something like a flourescent light plastic diffusor or some kind of fabric may also work.

Any one else made something to replace the diffusers on the chrony?
 
I haven't made one of these myself but have seen pictures of one and it looked pretty slick. Get some white plastic board, the stuff that is corrugated like cardboard, cut it to the size you would like. Bend it to the shape you want and find the spots where your diffuser rods will attach. Drill small holes at these locations and push through some old discarded brass at these points. The diffuser I saw used some pistol brass, but I'm sure anything would work .223 or 7.69X39, whatever you can find. Put your diffuser rods into your chrony, bend the board and slide the rods up inside the brass. You might have to fine tune the attachment points to make them more durable, but it should work. I don't know how easy that plastic board will hold its shape, but you could always run a cinch around the chrony and screen to keep it from flying off. Make it large enough and it should double as a roof so you can chrony in the rain.

Flouresent light diffuser plastic in white for drop ceilings, common to many basements. About 23" x 42" (more or less) & available at any Homehardware, Home Depot, etc . Can cut with a jigsaw or scribe lightly with utility knife & break over table edge. Sand corners & edges smooth & drill to suit.

There is no good reason to actually attach them to the chrony. And I can think of at least one reason not to....:eek:
 
I wonder if a photographic translucent umbrella wouldn't fit the bill? Come in a variety of sizes that would easily cover the length of the chrony. Just drill a small hole to one side or the other for the shaft. FS
 
Somehow I lost 1 piece of the sunscreen. I've got the Alpha-1 that takes 3 sections that tab together. For the last year I've put a piece of paper on that to replace the missing plastic, held it in place with small clamps.
It looked pretty bad but seemed to work okay.

I finally got around to buying replacement stuff from Chrony. I bought 2 complete diffusers, so I won't run out any time soon. I expect never, actually...

The other thing I did, is I glued mine together with Testors model glue. I found it a p.i.t.a. always snapping them together.
 
The shelter needs to one thing and one thing only...Keep the direct sun off of the sensors.

Cardboard will do a bloody fine job, you just have to watch it doesn't turn into a sail in the wind. :redface:
 
Thanks for the idea of using .22 shells and something. Not exactly the best material as I"ll be looking to get some white plastic board.

Worked like a charm though. Thankfully there wasn't any wind. I was in the shade anyway so it wasn't all that necessary, but now I know that it will work when the sun comes through the trees.

The block is there to keep it steady more than anything, but also in the hopes it might save the chrony a little from an untimely demise which many deem inevitable lol.

Good job, a small sheet of colorplast and you will be all set for all weather cronying:). I saw another one the other day where the diffuser rods were fine threaded rod and the diffuser was held in place by nuts and washers. Skookum. I don't know where you would find threaded rod that fine tho'??
