Can I make a firing pin for an old Spanish sxs without a lathe? Maybe a file and a drill? What steel should I use? Can I or should I harden it. Any help would be appreciated.

Depends on how handy you are!!!! I have made many out of grade 8 cap screws. A stub from a small drill bit the right size will work as well. O 1 drill rod hardened an then drawn back to between 35 and 45 RC is another option. Many years ago I made an extractor for a Win Mod 12 out of a great 8 bolt with only files used the gun for years and sold it later still going strong as far as I know. Though a lathe would make things MUCH more simple.

You can use o1 drill rod (available at Peavy mart etc). For a relatively short firing pin, like for a shotgun, you can usually get away without hardening them.

I've done a couple of sets for two of my older O/U's. One was a Yildiz 20 ga, the other was a Lanber IGUN.

With nothing but a drill press...a dremel....small files and 3 or 4 grades of emery cloth...60, 120,220-400 and a micrometer.

I'm a semi pack rat ( my opinion...NOT my wifes...lol)...I found some nice steel rods in old printers !!...some are thiscloseto the actual size needed. They worked magnificently. Good and hard too!

The original pin on the Yildiz broke after about 1000 rds of Sporting clays...the replaced pins I made stayed in the gun for the next two years. They were still in it when I traded it in.
Same thing with the old Lanber. the homemade Pins lasted longer than the old original ones, and were also still functioning when the gun was traded.

I fudged up a couple trying to get there too quickly. Once I got my patients back, it wasn't too awfully hard.

Thanks guys. I think I'll give it a try. Worse thing that can happen is it doesn't work. It't a single shot now anyway. Lol
