Home made muzzle brakes....

I know a few guys who've made their own. The brake on my 5.56 Vz58 was machined by the rifle's first owner. It works fine:

if I had a milling machine and a lathe, I would probably try...
I suspect this is what limits most people.

Well, I myself have been mulling over the idea of creating a brake since we have access to all the required machines at school. Considering we're encouraged to use them in our free time in order to better learn how they function, and that the material costs are payed for by the school... I figured I may as well have fun and make something I could actually use outside of class. Still probably a ways off though as I need to come up with a proper blueprint, find the correct dies and taps, etc etc.

Look for a copy of the book "The Accurate Muzzle Brake" by Glen Newcomb. Lots of information.
If slots are desired, a mill is just about mandatory. A drill press can do holes. Making an indexing jig is a good idea. Even a piece of hex or octagon stock can be threaded into the brake blank and used to index. Getting hole spacing even requires a jig or very careful layout. Drilling uniform holes into a curved surface requires a bit of planning.
