I thought an old 12" cast iron frying pan would make a good cowboy action target so, I rigged one up to a hinge by the handle so it would swing back and forth and hung it between the gate posts. Since I'm using lead bullets in .38 spl cases with CAS loads I though it would just go ding. Instead, the first shot from my Chappy "66 from 60 yds left a hole the size of a Loonie and the second shot was the size of a Toonie. So much for that idea.

I tried steel plate - 5/16 - welded a small L bracket from the top of the plate, then back to the cross bar - so it would swing, and so it would hang at an angle.

my first shot from my AR, went right through it. I wasnt firing anything fancy. .223 FMJ Sellior & Bellot...100 yrds. I'm guessing it was crap steel. I was totally expecting a nice "tinggg" and a plume of dust from my catch pit.

Nice design - but I guess I require thick steel.
Sorry no pics...

Silhouette targets

I made these a few years ago, they work well for the .22. I've also shot them with a .357 mag and they held up fine. I wouldent' use 1/4 inch steel for my high power rifle but the same target design would work. You could probably even find a Huge brake drum.

<edit> Since these photos were taken I have cut the counter weight off of the tops of my targets. It was an idea that didn't work.

These were built for a shotgun class. They're AR500 and a 3 piece design: base, leg, and plate. Also suitable for pistol.

On the left, kinda behind the IDPA target, you can see a large white popper and two mini poppers on the right of the pic. AR500, hinged, adjustable for "preset" and a few different base designs. Suitable for pistols and shotguns.

So, for all you Engineer Types, I have a project I want to try out. Our Club is going to be hosting a .22 Event, and I have been/taken given the responsibility of doing the Action .22 portion. What we/I want, are some sort of reactive target, that can be shot at with a .22 Lead/Copper platted bullets, with no splashback, from 11 -15 yards, no closer!

I want the target to be reactive, ie. it disappears, and also sound reactive...ie. you hear it when it is hit....and also easily resettable!

I want to make a couple of different arrays, with 5 - 7 targets each. The targets can vary in size.

Would love to hear your ideas!

Check out Winnipeg Revolver and Pistol Club, go to one of the results and scroll down to see the pictures, I have built most of these including the resetting coffin style popper and tombstone plate rack. Most fixed steel targets are on folding tripod stands. I have also built activators, drop turns, side expose, up down targets and clam shells for IPSC.
