Home Parkerizing--is it possible?

I would like to try home parkerizing.

I don't know much about it:

Who sells the components in Canada?

Do you have to sandblast the item first?

Do you allow the parkerizing solution to go into the inner areas of the receiver
on a Remington 870 shotgun?

Do you plug the barrel so no solution gets into it?

What is the best procedure for parkerizing?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Radocy. Do a search. Blasting, or etching helps. Gives a clean textured surface to help the solution to bite. Yes, the solution will go everywhere it is allowed to. Yes, you do not want to parkerize the bore. Strip, blast, degrease, prep., stew in sol'n, rinse, dry, lube. You need a stainless or glass tank, and a source of heat. A stove, camp stoves, etc. are fine. Heat should be even and controllable. Unlike caustic bluing, high heat is not necessary. Parkerizing is easy to do at home, unlike hot bluing.

Plug the barrel and fill it with distilled (preferably) water to equalize the pressure and then dunk the barrel in the park for 15 minutes or so.

WRT the receiver, it doesn't matter if most of the innards get parked, but you might want to slop some vaseline onto the ejector assembly before parking it. If it parks there it'll still work, but not as smoothly until that part wears smooth again.

Bead blasting the gun first is a good idea, or alternately, give it a quick dunk in muriatic acid to etch the metal.

Parkerizing is easy to do, sandblast all ferrous metals down to the white, then submerse them in the heated solution for about 15 minutes(depending on solution). The parts will fizz and bubble when done remove them and wash with clean water, then oil them right away so they do not rust. Parkerizing must be done in a Stainless steel tank and must be heated by external or an internal heat source to reach atleast a temperature of 175F. Mixing solution is just as easy, for our product it is a mixture of 4parts clean water:1 part solution. Which gives you enough for a 5 gallon tank.

You do not need to sandblast to bare metal. Doesn't hurt if you do though. You do need to take the whole thing apart and plug the barrel on a shotgun, but you don't need to fill it with anything. DO NOT parkerize any springs.
"...clean water..." Distilled water is best as it doesn't have anything else in it. Tap water has other chemicals in it that can affect the results.
