There has been a fair bit of talk lately about the younger generation getting out too shoot.
My daughter has been enjoying her home painted pink Cooey Ace for about two years now and is looking at moving into the semis.
I also have a son who is 28 months and seems to enjoy pulling that trigger (while Daddy holds the rifle and aims), so I've spent some time looking for something more kid friendly.
Some of the child specific rifles are rediculously expensive so I pursued alternatives. We already have a Cooey, which is fun, but once the stock is cut down it's basically a child's gun for life.
What I did was find an old Ruger 10/22 stock and take it over to the scroll saw, took exactly two inches (following the normal butt stock profile) off the back end. Then I took the belt sander too her and took off the barrel band profile, smoothed out the butt and thinned out the girth of the pistol grip.
What I ended up with is displayed in the following photos.
The stock has been bathed in Bombay Mahogany Gloss stain and is drying. I'll give her a rub down with steel wool and possibly another coat of stain. Once it's dry I'll take more photos before putting the laquer on. Then we'll get some more shots and put it together with a stainless 10/22.
The beauty of this is that as needed, I can put a full size stock back on the rifle to accomodate older or larger shooters.
Maybe one of these days I'll get around to doing this with a bull barrel set up.
