Hi guys,

I have selected a caliber the 6.5 Grendel. I have one bolt rifle the CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62X39mm. The cartrige uses the bolt face of the .308.

My home work consist of finding not restricted semi-automatic rifles. That shoots the 7.62X39mm. The rifle will then be re-barreled and chambered for the 6.5 Grendel, with a bolt action or a semi-auto action.

1. Ruger mini-30 is this a precision rifle or which model is?
2. CZ 858 not restricted precision?
3. ???

Thanks

Installing a match barrel on either the Mini 30 or the CZ 858 would undoubtedly help with accuracy, but neither one is a precision rifle. Finding an unrestricted match grade gas gun might prove to be a real challenge, since so much accuracy work has been focused on AR platforms. Some accuracy work has been done on Mini-14s, but I don't know of anyone in Canada who specializes in Match grade Minis. Match grade unrestricted M-14s are out there, but the action doesn't lend itself to the PPC size case head. If you are serious about building a precision gas gun, you might need to step up to the .308 Winchester size family of cartridges, and get an M-14 built into a match rifle. An M-14 chambered for the .260 Remington would be kinda neat, if you like the 6.5.

The question I need to find the answer for. The COL for the 7.62x39 is 2.205 and for the 6.5 Grendel 2.245 as per Hornady 8th edition Is 0.040 difference would be a problem/fit for a CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39mm?

The 7.62 x39 does not use the same bolt face as the 308. If you want to use a 308 bolt face my choice would be the 260 but if you want to chamber the cz 527 to something it should be based on the 7.62 x39 round like the 6 ppc or the 6 ppc necked up to 6.5

I think you would be a fool to try to modify to improve the CZ527 Carbine. Of the two that I've shot ( one belonging to my GF) with factory PRVI ammunition, they shoot 3 shots through a dime at 100 yards. And in all honesty, if you're asking these questions here, you don't have the knowledge or skills to actually do so.

Probably more so, its waste of money even if you can improve it, there are better rifles capable to shoot much longer distances, and none of them are carbines. Turning a Chevette into a Ferrari is rarely achieved. Its better to just get a Ferrari right from the beginning rather than wasting time, money, and destroying a Chevette before you come to the same conclusion.

Thanks I overlooked the bolt diameter. The head of the case Grendel in not the same as the .308.

Gee I missed on this one. Sorry! Thanks Neil for pointing me in the right direction.

As for the CZ 527 7.62x39 have been looking every here to find a use one in need of a new barrel.

You should write him a message. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQgIFscVOE8&feature=related

You could just purchase Lapua factory 6.5 Grendel brass, but if you are set on making your own from 7.62X39, its a good idea to approach the desired neck diameter in several step downs, say .30 to 7mm to 6.5mm rather than attempting to go from .30 to 6.5 in a single operation. Because you are concerned about precision, turning your necks for concentricity will be important, you probably want to stay within .002" of run out. Another option would be to begin with 6PPC brass and open it up to 6.5, and this would solve the issues that often comes from decreasing the neck diameter of the parent case.

Thanks Boomer,

Ruger has the mini 30 in 6.8 SPC. COL 6.5 Grendel/6.8 SPC is an issue for the mag with longer bullets. I joined the 6.5 grendel and 6.8 spc forums. More homework...

What is the max COL fitting the mini 30 6.8 spc mag?
What is the max COL fitting the mini 30 7.62x39 mag?

Nice web site for the mini 14 and 30. http://www.accuracysystemsinc.com/index.php

Later!
