I don't have a pic but I bought one of those aluminum "tool cases" from Zellers for $20.
Like the one on the left.

I glued egg crate foam together to make 3 layers. I can get 4 handguns and mags in it with room to spare.
All told I have around $35 tied up in it.
The good thing is..it doesn't look like a gun case.

Don't have a pic of it/them, but I have used the plastic box that screwguns come in. My former employer used Dewalt screwguns and the boxes were all piled in the corner, covered in ..... well you know. I asked if I could have them and they said sure.

Took them home, cleaned them, used on older eggcrate foam padding on the inside, and bought a long looped masterlock to lock the handle closed. (that might have been the Makita box). Made them out of most all the plastic boxes I could get for free.

The neat thing, they look like a screwgun box, nobody would think the wiser.

Gun cases

I have several cases that I use depending on the number of guns and gear I want to carry around. One of them is a brief case with combo locks. Another is a tool box. I'm strongly in favour of using cases that don't scream "GUN". With a little bit of imagination we can put a case together that is better than many gun cases at a fraction of the cost. I also avoid putting stickers and labels on my cases that advertise the contents.

I've seen stickers with "Precision paper-punching equipment", or some such on it (I think the RACentre did that one :)

This might be stupid question, but what are you guys using for foam? I'm looking for something that's easy to cut and shape, but doesn't fall apart and leave foam crumbs everywhere.

try using a styrofoam block. cut it to shape and then wrap it with velvet or some other cloth to make it look nice / keep it from leaving crumbs

Foam

Various kinds of foam can be found to do a good job. I have Pelican Cases. Mine are model 1510. Do a Google search and you will see that the common approach is to use what is called "pick and pluck" foam in layers with solid sheets and "egg crate" to build the configuration you want. Foam isn't easy to cut smoothly with a standard knife. If you have access to one, try an electric carving knife. You could probably buy a cheap one just for your project. I use spray adhesive to hold layers together. I have automobile panel adhesive that works well. Make card board templates in the shape of the guns you want to fit. A good way to do this is to create life sized images from internet photos by scaling them to the accurate size of the pistol. I then glue those to card board and use the templates to guide my cutting. If you compress the foam tightly enough, you can sandwich the guns between layers of egg crate foam and it will hold reasonably well.

I bought a sheet of the egg crate foam they sell for mattress pads. Some of my cuts aren't pretty but it isn't going on a runway in Milan. ;)

I personally don't bother with foam. I use soft pistol cases inside the tool box. This allows me to bring whatever I need for the type of shooting I am doing. If it's an IPSC trip, then there is going to be lots of bulky ammo in there, lots of mags and 1 pistol. If its bullseye there will be 1 pistol with bulky match grips, a spotting scope and tripod, not much ammo. So by using the soft cases I protect the pistols while allowing me to pack the case however I want.

Custom cut foam does look pro when you open up the case I guess. I know there is a place near me that custom cuts foam for anything - I think they use hot wire to do it and it's cheap. There may be someone near you that does that if you want to go that route.
