Homemade .22 Reactive Targets Post Yours

Here's the scan, it weighs just over a lb I think. the mini Hostage target uses a old door hinge and when you shoot it swings from one side to the other.

I take pop cans and fold the tabs up then string them up between two trees.
I'm sure the recycling man finds the can bits an interesting chore.
If you fill them with water they turn inside out when shot. The game is to shoot off the tab without blowing up the can.

I forgot to add, the graph-paper I was using has 1/4" squares

And here's some footage of me shooting the walking jack and the mini hostage

Thanks arcstarter! Those look like fun.

I gotta get a couple of those made !!
What kind and thickness of steel should I get ?

The guy in the video mentioned pistol ones ...have you thought of or tried making bigger ones ?? Any ideas on size ? I am going to talk with my local welder about a few of the 22 cal ones for now..but later I might have to get a bigger version made up .

Thanks arcstarter
Nice targets :)

I would definitely take it to a shop with cnc plasma or waterjet, I cut them out by hand with a torch and it takes a long time to get them cleaned up.

I did use 1/4" mild steel and if your just using a .22 on them they can take a ton of abuse even at close ranges. when I was testing them out I didn't get any ricochets. I think if you could get 1/4" AR400/500 cut by waterjet you could even use them for pistol calibers.

I was wondering how you cut them. I'm going to have to cut them by hand with a torch (good practice anyways... and I need it) so I'm glad to hear they can come out looking good.

On the other hand it is a good excuse to get a plasma cutter... hmm

If you're going to find someone with a waterjet, maybe make them a little bigger and of hard steel, they'd be killer-fun with an AR or an M14 !

No problems guys, thanks for all the great words and I'll try to keep bringing more ideas to the table. I have another idea I want to build it consists of progressively smaller plates so as you shoot it they fall down and reveal a smaller plate behind it. The idea is to see how small you can go without missing.

Here's a concept of what I'm thinking. You could add more plates if you want.
The frame would be made out of 1" square tubing and holes drilled to allow a chunk of ready rod to go through to provide a pivot point for the targets. This would allow you to change out the plates for smaller or bigger sizes as needed.

Arcstarter that looks like some targets on Top Shot i saw recently on tv. I like your idea for changing targets easily. Lots of room to play with on that concept, from size of target to the number of targets. Oh ya one more reason to get a plasma cutter.

I like the walking targets. They might be cheaper and easier to fabricate if you only had to use round cutouts. You could then use 1/2" rod to form the tetrahedron that interconnects them. Then you could just cut out rounds.

I found the walking tarets on eBay for $20 plus shipping

I'm curious if they could be made for less ?

Any idea how much would steel and waterjet cutting cost?

Arcstar, I like that a lot.

Now, anyway you could spring load or maybe through a set of pulleys, set something so that after shooting the last target, they all reset?

OR! set up a few servos that control a few old motors on timers and make them pop up and down.
