homemade deer bait

My favorite is an easy to come by bag of water softner salt. I throw it down near a deer trail by my farm and can sit and watch those deer come all day long once they find it. I guess that is more of a bait, not necessarily an attractant. Odor wise - there are many products out there commercially, but I don't place any stock in them. I am not sure what the baiting laws are like in your neck of the woods.
I dump a bag of watersoftener salt into the soil and work it in then dump some corn/oats/beans on top with some buckjam (acorn flavour) they eat all the food on top, then by November there is a 3 foot wide hole about 8" deep where the deer have been pawing at the soil getting the salt minerals out.
I dump it where there is a well used deer trail close by. That way the deer will get a bit of it before the mob of friggin raccoons chomp it all down

Straight corn from the farm. We dump a half bag a week in some spots a few weeks leading up to the fall. Just don't feed it to them in the winter, supposedly it screws up their winter digestion and is not good for them. Here in Ontario we can get "MNR" feed from the store and is a mix of stuff just for feeding deer in the winter.
I've never tried it but I've heard that molasses poured on a stump works well. A guy once told me he takes a big can or apple juice and nails it through the rim (bottom) up a tree and lets it slow drip down the tree.
I'm going to try the softener salt, that sounds good.

Back on topic. 
40 kg bag of FC Rock salt+ some (10kg?) 1:1 dairy mineral + 25 kg bag of limestone(pulverized) + some dry molasses. Works for me...but I just add what I have on hand.
Split the mix in 5, loosen the ground at each location and stir it in.
Other than that, apples are always #1 attractant for me.
