So who here has made an e-caller?
Looking at Varmintal.com and Predatormasters there's a parts list for making one on the cheap, you'll need: MP3 player, small 9v Amp, PA horn and some cable; All told you'd be into about $100, then download some sounds and you're rockin'!
Sure I'd love a Foxpro etc, but if I could make one for less money I'd be up for that.. So who here is considering, or has made one?

Not being a "techie" is there a recommended economy MP3 player to buy or brand to stay well away from? Seen one in Wally world for under $40

Cheers!

Works sweet - I have done a couple of upgrades. Bought a small MP player mainly to cut down on the bulk and now have rigged to be "cordless".

First thing is to have a set of FRS radios that you can program to take the confirmation beep off - most of the newer ones have that. In the speaker box, use a 1/8" plug double ended cable (6 foot length Radio Shack stock#42-2387A) from the mini amp to the headphone speaker jack on the radio. This is now your receiver.

Attach tour CD player / MP3 player with another 1/8" double plug cable to the microphone jack on the second FRS radio. You will likely find that it is a samller diamater jack on the radio and you will need to use a reducing plug from 1/8" to 3/32" plug - I bought mine at the "source" - part # 2740381 - have also seen the same reducing plug at Future shop - usually will find them in the cell phone accessories. Anyways, this unit is now your transmitter.

So, turn on the music source, press transmit on the FRS and it will be received and transmitted from the caller unit.

Unfortunately, one of my best friends died in January and I was tied up with funeral and estate matters, and I didnt get another chance to get out with it before the season closed. However, there is always next fall!

I made 2 but am not happy with the volume, I have everything turned up as loud as it goes, and it isnt as loud as I hoped it would be....maybe its the MP3 player.

$10 512mb mp3 player and a $25 megaphone. Works awesome for crows but I suspect the batteries wont last long in the cold during predator season. I will have a foxpro for that.

Building one is not that expensive and difficult as GTH said but the most challenge part is the remote control part...

Foxpro is good for sure..but buildind one for yourself and see the critters come is priceless.

I made the one they have on the nodakoutdoors.com site. It worked great in the warmer weater, but volume suffered in the cold. I solved that problem by using the chemical handwarmers from Wally World and stuffing them in the housing. Awesome volume in the cold now! I haven't called in any coyotes though.:( Just a barred owl and a pair of red-tailed hawks. As for the MP3 players, the one from Wally World will work just fine. I have about 1 hour of calling sequences loaded on my 512meg MP3 and have tons of memory left. I think that 256meg would be the largest size needed for the e-caller.

Finding the mini amp was the hardest, as I had to cross the river to get to a Radio Shack as the Source has sweet PA for this project, not even the speaker.

Use the MP3 player that can change memory card, (small memory cards are cheap as dirt now) and record different calling sequencies for different situations...

I made one from a MP3 player, a pocket amp, small horn speaker and a small shaving kit bag. All the sounds a guy needs is on the net or you can buy the Randy Anderson calls. I think it cost me around $40 was loud and worked really good, took alot of coyotes with that unit.

Cheers!!
