Homemade h.p's

Go ahead and shoot em. I cant see there being any trouble other than they may group minute of barndoor at 100 yards.

Mind you I'm also the guy who takes his life in his hands and shoots steel through a fixed full choke 870.

Be super-duper careful, the bullet might fragment into free neutrons and cause an instant shower of tachion radiation. The tip may collect any U-238 floating about in the atmosphere and cause localized nuclear cook-offs.

Safety not guaranteed.

A nuclear hollow point? sounds fun to me!:p

I'll give it a whirl and report back.

I like it when guys think outside of the box, and when that happens, the "It's Dangerous" crowd always quickly swarms. They serve a purpose and once in a while they have a point though. I wouldn't do this unless it was a closed base and/or a bonded bullet, and even then, would check the bore for debris for the first few shots.

My immediate question was "Why do you think drilling a hollow point will make it a varmint bullet?" Varmint bullets rely on thin jackets and other design features that make them fragile at the high speeds for which they are loaded. Those look like vintage "Silver Tips" which are a reasonably tough bullet designed for large game and will be travelling in the 2800 fps and lower range on impact. IMO, even with the HP, they'll just pass through a small critter much like a FMJ would.

As for accuracy, it's the condition of the base of the bullet, not the tip, that has the greatest effect on accuracy, They should still be as accurate as before the modification.

home made hollow point

Very unsafe. There are posts on here about that. One guy said the bullet jacket because it is not "formed" around the hollowed out area can peel back on the way out causing shrapnel, barrel damage and even a catastrophic failure by turning sideways in the barrel. Look how unclean and jagged your holes are. I can see that jacket peeling right off and some sticking and pulling that bullet sideways into your barrel. Not really worth it, even if he is wrong.

I am going to disagree with this statement. As was pointed out the only real danger is if the bullet has an open base and if it is shot in a rough or heavily fouled bore there is a chance that the jacket could stick in the bore and the core shoot out of it leaving a barrel obstruction.

FWIW, 44Bore
