If you want better "action" within the pail, you might try fastening a funnel/cone upside down in the centre of the bucket. That will keep the media and everything moving around the outside.

It is fun making stuff yourself and knowing that you made it for low cost and usually better than store bought. I made a sand blaster 20 years ago out of a 40 pound propane tank and I still use it today and it works fabulous.
Not to totaly highjack the thread,
but a few pics of your sand blaster would be cool
SandRoad.......i value your input...do you think a bbq tank has enough dished radius on the bottom of the tanks for a vibrating tumbler?
