Homemade wooden stocks

Wow...nice work Rifledude. Those stocks are very impressive.
I have always wanted to try making one....maybe that will be a project for this winter.

Wow nice work gents.
I'm certainly not capable of that but I did have an old barrelled action that I couldn't find a stock for so had a local chap make one for me. He even fabricated the trigger guard since I couldn't find one to fit.

Where do you guys buy wood to make them? Do you just laminate a few pieces together or do you go to a mill and get a larger piece?

here's a really nicely grained chunk of black walnut I have been meaning to dive into to complete a replacement stock for a enfield no1mk3 action.
I have chalk drawn the outline and have started to router the outline of the buttstock. it's a crappy pic but you get the idea.
I had this block of walnut for some time, this thread has motivated me to add it to my must finish list :D
I'll post up when she's done.

45acpking my uncle left me with one similar that he did
to build up a laminate would one just reverse the grain )( or would one make a perpendicular layer like ply wood ?

I need at least a 2 inch width myself and was considering gluing two 1 inch pieces of maple,

and guys could you show us NOOBS some more of the rasps you use esp tools for inletting
thanks

i have done a couple laminates but i used 3/16 sheets I had custom done from yew and black walnut. I roughed cut everything but the barrel chanell prior to assembling with glue and clamps. i used an epoxy putty cast of the action from a stock of the same action and inserted it while laminating (sprayed with pam so the glue sticks less ;) )
this allowed zero crush on the open sections of the action/laminate. If any of that makes sense.... or one could simply do all the inletting later. DREMEL tools are an invaluable item for any project such as this. Being a steel fabricator at the time... my clamp was two rectangular 3/4 inch steel plates about 10 inches wide and 3 inches longer than the stock at each end. used 1 inch structural bolts every 6 inches and tightened up with even torque all around.... i forget how much foot lbs it was.
I sold those stocked rifles some time ago...... was trying to find a pic but.....

the piece in the pic i posted above is 2 1/4 inches thick and will be a solid stock... trick will be drilling the buttstock for the enfield's rear mounting bolt hole in the right spot :D

I cut all my own blanks from local walnut trees because I prefer to use crotch wood and most mills have no idea how to saw them. The down side is they take around 2 years to dry so you need to plan a head. I dont like to laminate boards into stock blanks because it leaves joint lines in your final product and to me looks like crap. You need 2.5'' to 3'' thickness for most stocks.
Good luck
