first this first i am a total newbie to reloading. my only experiance is looking at the kits in the store and saying WTF? i am getting into a slug gun for hunting but knowing my self i will take it out with all my other guns for a day of fun.

what i am looking for is some info on loading my own slugs/sabots. what is involved. what kind of press do i need. really i am looking for a run down on getting started. i was thinking of getting the lee anavarisy kit for starting to reload my 30-06. will this kit be usefull for shotgun shells too.

Usually the presses are different for brass cases and shot shells. I haven`t loaded slugs but have loaded shotshell for trap and birds for years, usually not many load there own slugs unless they shoot them a lot. Pick up some good books first so you know what`s needed for each type of reloading. The ABC`s of reloading is a good start, and google reloading and you will come across a lot of good video`s on youtube.
 
The lee anniversary kit is for reloading pistol or rifle cartridges. If you want to reload shotgun shells you'll need a specific press for shotgun. The lee load-all is what you'll want to look at.
 
what shooting distance for hunting do you plan to use them? rifled or smooth bore barrel??

a lee load all 2 press will cost you $60, its nothing fancy but will get the job done
not sure where you will buy slugs, I cast my own with a $25 lee 1 oz mold

1000 shotshell primers go for about $45
1 lb of powder $20-25 depending on type
1000 wads are about $15

best to use your own once fired hulls, if you want them on the cheap (but quality), buy a flat of 250 remington gun club birdshot hulls for $60, and use those, they will last for several reloads.

the gear above has already been paid of just by making a bunch of slugs (my cost is about 25-30 cents per slug, compared to $1+ for factory slugs)
 
In my experience, 12g hulls RARELY need to be resized. That said, it will be easier to get yourself a used 12g press which resizes and decaps in one step. Please, look for a used mec for $150 instead of a new Lee for $70. There's a reason that the mec shotshell reloaders are the standard :)

You can use the standard star crimp for your slugs as well. A cast 7/8 or 1oz lee slug will fit right inside your normal wads. If you wanted to get a little more involved, you could get some fibre wads and a roll crimper, which used your drill press or cordless drill to friction heat/form the roll crimp.

ill be shooting out of a fully rifles barrel. sabots are like 12-19$ for 5. i wanna play so i guess i have to pay. i will look into a shotgun press. thanks for the replys.
 
ballisticproducts.com have specialty slug components. You can get it here, except for the banned stuff..(primers, powder, etc.) as it is in USA

+1 this is the cheapest way to get the job done right. I went to the trap range and asked for their hulls. Came home with at least 500 Remington Gun Club hulls for free. If you don't cast, I saw a for sale ad on the EE last year for slugs cast from the same Lee mold.

The LeeLoadAllII is sneered at by some, but for my limited buckshot and slug use, it is perfect. The shells are crimped tight and feed/shoot reliably....what more can you ask? I agree the LLAII is not the best rig for trap/bird shells.
 
now i got a question about sabot slugs. since i have got a rifled slug gun. is loading my own slugs in a wad not going to do much for accuracy? as far as i understand a sabot is the outer plastic casing that bites the rilfeing to cause spin. with a wad will this still happen. can i load my own sabots. i would assume making them is a little more difficult and i would need to buy from a company.

any advise please
 
The lee 1oz slug is a sabot slug; it has a horizontal bar(lee calls it a "drive key") across the bottom that digs into the plastic wad upon firing. This allows the rifling to spin both the plastic wad and the slug inside it.
 
keep in mind, while the costs are kept down, letting you practice more, you will likely not get the same performance as you will out of factory sabots
 
if i can keep it under 3" at 100yrds i am laughing. factory stuff is just out to lunch for cost. if i find loading to entertain me i will probly get into the rifle side too
