Hey everyone. I was just wondering what everyone's opinion on a brand of rifle. Pro's and Con's. I have a budget of 2500 and I do want a wood stock. Been told a Winchester Model 70 is my best option.
Also I do want a walking hunting rifle if that makes sense.

Thanks everyone

Is the 2500 for optic and gun, or just the gun?

I would stay away from the 7x57, I have one and finding ammo is increasingly harder each year, great cartridge though if you can find them.
Yeah , gotta reload it. Shoulda mentioned that.

I chronographed some new loads yesterday. 2912 fps for a 150grn. A bit Spicey...back those off a few grains

"Best" is a matter of opinion. Your best might be different than someone else's best, and you'd both be right.

Nothing wrong with a m70, I'm a fan. The 3 position safety is nice. But there are dozens of different makes and models just as good.

If you're buying used, be aware of the different M70 actions.

The original CRF (controlled round feed) m70 was made from the 1930s until 1963. It has a mauser-style claw extractor.

From 1964 up to the early 1990s, the m70 was changed to a push feed. You can recognize it from not having the mauser-style claw on the bolt. Its a good action but never had as many fans as the CRF m70.

In the early 1990s the action went back to the original CRF with mauser style extractor.

The featherweight is a nice rifle. It has quite lively recoil because of the light weight, and featherweight M70 300win is not a rifle everyone will enjoy bench shooting.

I always recommend Rem 700’s due to their avail of parts and aftermarket accessories to people, so..

Remington 700 BDL/CDL with a 22” barrel (24-26” for a Magnum)
Leupold VX II, III 3i etc 3-9x40

Should be well under budget and easily sourced depending on what Cal/Cart you’re after. If you want to cheapen it up a bit there’s always Rem 700 SPS models to consider as well. 22” barrel/3-9x40 setup is versatile enough for most hunting applications out there.

On the used front for the above.. it could easily be done for around $16-$1800 or less all in if you scour the EE or GP ads.

Don’t discount Tikka T3’s or Weatherby Vanguards either. They’re just a solid platforms as a Rem 700 that will last you years with proper care.

Your question is too vague, give us some more details.

What sort of terrain do you hunt in? How big of concern is weight? What cartridges interest you? What scope are you mounting?

$2500 is a healthy budget and there are lots of good options. Model 70s are good, but it depends on what you want. If I wanted a wood stocked, nice looking rifle, in that price range it would either be a Model 70 Super Grade or a Sako 90 Hunter.
