I've been hunting black bear in Ontario for a number of years now... We start baiting about 1 month prior to the season and always have bears when it comes time to sit in the tree... However I've always wanted to try doing a honey burn when it's time to sit but have never gotten around to it.. I thought this may be the year and was wondering if any of yall have done it, what success you've had with it, if it was worth it etc, etc,
Any tips and tricks would also be appreciated..

Thanks, DL

A lot depends if the bear is close enough to smell it. We have used it with excellent results, big bear was in within 10 minutes, no bait at spot, another time bear came in to watch burn. Other times you are just making smoke. We use a small backpacker single burner and a small veg/bean can to burn honey and or sugar.
I also have had good results with insence burning stick. They are a lot cheaper than the ones you buy for bear at sport shops and a lot lighter than a stove. If you have a good bear population the inscence burn in cinnamon is as good as baiting and a lot lighter than honey burns. If you don't have any bears in your area than a mountain of bait or burns are useless. I spend from Sept until around freeze up at our camp and only use the inscence sticks, they are a lot less work but then I spend a lot of time looking for bear and moose.
If you don't believe in burns than you never had a bear come into a camp while making breaky.:)

i don't use honey

I use a burn religiously as a way to get my bait active for the year. I don't use honey though, I use vanilla. Go to the store and buy the cheapest stuff you can. pour some in a old soup can and nail it to a tree by your bait. When I put my bait out for the year I usually go out almost every day and do a burn(usually in the evening) the vanilla smell is very strong and sweet smelling...carries a looonng ways through the woods. Once I start getting hits I will sometimes stop the burns or keep going, depending on what I have coming in to my bait.

I like baiting with corn and molasses. once you start getting bears coming it has a snowball effect...they get the molasses on their paws and when they leave they leave a nice sticky and smelly trail through the woods...brings every bear in the country right back to your bait. :D

Just some ideas.

If you want to have an attractant in addition to bait, try using Anise Oil.

You can buy the concentrated Oil of Anise in some stores or the synthetic stuff I use is from bearscents.com . With the concentrated stuff, soak a small rag and tie it around a smaller tree about 15ft high(bend tree, tie near top, then release tree).
With the bearscents stuff, I just spray it onto the foliage surrounding the bait.

I've read about and looked for Anise before, read nothing but good things about it but have never been able to find it.. What type of stores would have it? Like a hunting store or somewhere else?

I tried the same idea with vanilla extract last year but didn't have much luck with it, still got a bear but it had been coming to the bait anyway and none of the bears seemed to pay much attention to the vanilla rag.

I like the idea of the incense and the burn with vanilla and may try one or both of those as well...... Thanks for the ideas and posts guys,

DL

I make a bear attracant spray out of the following ingredients: oil of anise, pure vanilla extract, almond extract and cherry extract. After I've mixed them together I'll cut them with canola oil and pour into a spray bottle
($2.99 @ Cdn.Tire). Spray this mixture into the foliage around your bait, especially conifers, makes a better attractant than burning honey and way less work. Most of these ingredients can be found at a nbaking goods store. Cheers.

Awesome.... Thanks my friend, I'll definitely give it a shot... We bait once a week for a month previous to the hunt, but I only get one week to hunt due to work and it being 8 hours away so anything to up my advantage is great.

Appreciate it Big Game

If you use the incense burn take a 2 litre plastic pop bottle and drill 1/2" holes 1 inch up from the bottom around the bottle. Stick the burning insense on a safe base so you do not burn the bush down ( old sponky wet stump work great ). Now put plastic bottle up side down over insence to trap smoke in bottle allowing it to escape from holes you drilled. You can use other types of plastic bottles which I like because they are light to carry or you can buy these but way more money.

Why do you need the plastic bottle? I don't se how that helps things?

Tried a trick I read about on here yesterday regarding baiting bears.Pop a bag of popcorn, when its done nuke it for another minute or so.Do not open til you get to your stand/blind.We got to the blind at 630P.M. opened the bag and set it on a stump about 60ft out past our bait stn. At about 655P.M. A 2yr old and a yearling came in on the right, right past our bait and straight to the popcorn.I dont know if it was coincidence or what. There was a slight breeze.I couldn't beleive how they zeroed in on the popcorn. These two have been regular customers as we're holding out for a BIG fella whos in the area.Anyhow, its worth a try.
