Does your front sight need protection? If it is just for show I vote no. If it were for the only sighting equipment I would vote yes.

Was never a fan of hooded sights until I bought a couple of Zastavas.... I really like the added protection as well as the overall look... not sure why you would want to take th ehood off when you remove the scope... In some conditions they can actually be an asset to look through....

I can't think of anything positive to say about a sight hood other than perhaps offering some protection. They snag more, they dim the light on the blade and there's the potential in a quick fire situation that one mistakes the sides of the hood for the sight blade. All bad.

I'd go with a hood myself. I like the looks of them, and the protection. One with a 'sunroof' opening to allow light in would be a good choice, or depending on the rifle, a military style winged front sight might look good and function well.

I prefer the look of a hood... an open blade looks rather like an open zipper... No sense in building a nice gun and then "flying low..."

I'm not a fan of winged semi-hoods... they look "blown open" and unintentional... I do like the look of vented hoods, but then there is always the possibility of a twig pushing through when busting brush and torqueing against the blade... not an issue with a steel bead (the twig would be small), but if a fiber optic rod is employed, then it could be damaged. A vented hood with a steel bead (perhaps a tritium or ivory tip) would be the best compromise in 90%+ of situations... the other 10% you make it work... considering that the scope is your primary sighting device, it is unlikely that you will ever have an issue with this set-up.

I like the look and protection of the hood, but they are a pain to keep on if there is no spring keeper on it.
