I've been hunting for about 3 years with a borrowed rifle every season. It's getting old. I will probably only ever hunt deer, elk and moose.
I'm going between the Tikka T3 7mm rem mag and the Sako Greywolf 7mm. I want to have a reliable hunting rifle that I can hand down to my kid someday. I'm not a gun fanatic and don't really like fussing with them too much. I just want a quality rifle and my freezer full every year.

I vote for the Sako.

They are both good rifles, bit I like the feel & finish of a Sako better and prefer the mag system.

Why abuse your body with a mag if you're only hunting deer?
How about a sweet chambering like a 6.5x55 or 7x57?
Lots of medium calibers in between.
Most good for deer and moose as well.
Mags don't belong in the deer department unless your wish'in for long legs.

And then the fight started....................

He did say he was hunting elk and moose. Either one is a great choice. Although the 7mm is not a favorite of mine it will be fine for what you are doing.

thats great that you want to have a rifle of your own, something worth handing down........ i relate to that.

........ I do find it funny that you

and yet, you Joined Canadian Gun Nutz........ welcome aboard ...

:)

Sako, hands down. The Tikka is fine for what it is, but it's certainly no rifle to hand down to your kids. Get the Sako, get opti lock rings and bases, get a Leupold or Zeiss scope and have it all professionally mounted (not some guy at the countet, have a gunsmith or yourself install it, lap the rings and tourque to spec. You will never need to fiddle or worry about your gun again.

7mm rem mag shoots animals just fine. Wouldn't be worried about bears if I carried one of those. I'm not terribly concerned walking with my 6.5x55 either. Get to know the rifle, you might only get one shot and most cartridges and bullets are good enough.

By the way, my 6.5 is a Tikka T3 lite and although I would probably rather have the Sako, it' a pretty good accurate nice shooting, nice carrying rifle.

Squint me eyes and see the elk......yikes.
Go terdy cal in mag then......wow, how'd eye miss the elk?

Or get a .308 Winchester or 7mm-08 or a .243 Winchester or a .270 or a .30-06 or a .260 Remington or a .338 Lapua or a .280 or a 6.5 Swede or a .338 Federal or a .25-06 or a .303 Brit or a .30-30.... Any of them kill elk just fine, without incurring mag flinch. Elk aren't magical.

You'll get a hundred different suggestions on here for your deer/moose/elk rifle on here. In my opinion, where you are not a rabid shooter/reloader/gun nut, you can't go wring with the .30/06. It's available in a huge nember of rifles, power is more than sufficient, recoil is manageable for the occaisional shooter, factory ammo options are many and ammo availability is unsurpassed, my 2 cents. Though the 7mm is a fine round as well. Generally barrels will be 2 inches longer than the .30/06 chambered rifles. In my experience the 7mm is no more effective than the .30/06 on the game mentioned. Personally I prefer the Sako to the Tikka though the Tikkas are fine rifles as well.

Sound advise.

I would also go for the Sako, great rifles. 7mm Mag is a fine all-rounder (I'd prefer .30-06 myself as they usually have a shorter barrel) and I've used one for many years as my "one and only".

The 7mm Rem Mag is a wonderful all around cartridge and ammo is virtually as attainable as 30-06, lets face it, it's been around since the early sixties. The recoil is comparable to the '06 certainly not more, in rifles of similar weight. I have only one word of advice, do not buy cheap ammo with cheap bullets!!! The big 7 exerts a lot more forces on bullets than does the '06, therefore you need better bullets, and stay in the upper weight range 160 gn plus. There is no flaw in your choice of calibers if you take my advice, you will kill everything you want to, with great efficiency. As far as your rifle choices I cannot comment as I have no experience with either.

A guy named Warren Page had a lot to do with the creation of the 7 mag. He wanted a round that hit as hard as the .30/06 but with the trajectory of the .270 Winchester and that sums up the 7mm Remington Magnum pretty well. A fine round but it does not kill a bit better than the .30/06. Dead is dead. Factory loads are available for the 06 in weights from 110 grains to 220 grains and in many areas of Canada the country store does not have a box of 7mm Magnum ammo while if they sell ammo they have the .30/06. I find in the same make of rifle the big 7 does kick noticeably harder than the .30/06 and is a little louder. Not to an objectionable degree if you shoot a fair bit but the once a year hunter may be bothered by it. To take advantage of it's slightly flatter trajectory the 140 grain loadings in the 7mm seem to be the optimum choice to me and premium bullets are available in factory loads.

The Sako in 7mmRM in a heartbeat !
Either Sako's Optilok rings or the comparable Leupold Rings made for Sakos. I'd put a VXII in 2-7x on it & be a very happy camper.
160 Noslers in a premium load would be my ammo choice. Add a good padded sling and away you go. ;)
