Hopefully the only rifle purchase I'll ever make

You've really gone with an apples & oranges comparison in terms of rifles.

The Sako is more expensive but I would look at the "step ups" from the T3 being: Tikka T3 -> Sako A7 -> Sakon Finnlight

See my post here in the moose gun section regarding my opinion of synthetic/stainless moose rifles with a detachable mag at $1k or less for rifle only (I'm picking up the Sako this week).

In regards to calibre I use a 7mm Mag but only because I shoot out to 300 yards or a hair more. If you're shooting at less than that I would go with the 30-06 instead.

I would not take a magnum for what you are hunting, you don't need it, you don't the extra weight, nor the abuse on your body! 308 is my choice, some folks will say 30-06, I prefer the short action. You can buy a real good used rifle in either cartridge for a very reasonable price, so many to choose from. And the bonus is: even your local Barber Shop will have good ammo for either one! Take your time, think long and hard, make the right choice for you. Good luck hunting and a full freezer.

I don't see as the ability to get ammo at any store weighs in so heavy with people's choices ?
It's like something that was worded in a magazine one time and now it just gets repeated too no end.
It takes little effort to bring or buy extra rounds. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail...

yes indeed, you are correct, I never take that into account for myself, I just thought I'd toss that in to a guy for helpful info that doesn't like to "fuss and get overly involved with firearms", if ya know what I mean! it may mean something to him in making his decision to purchase the right hunting rifle cartridge for his needs! Did you read the OP's first post thoroughly? Did anything absorb in? I think not! Or does your handle spell it all out in bold print? I think so! What say you?

If you're thinking of handing it down one day, I would go for the Sako Greywolf in a caliber of your choice. I have the 'Hunter' model in 7mm-08 and have taken a number of deer and 2 moose with it. I considered the Greywolf before purchasing the hunter model, I'm just more of a blued and wood guy.

Was not just you who mentioned it TD..if I was too give my 2 bits it would be a Sako 85 grey wolf in 7mmremmag or 300win mag..with Zeiss or Swarovski on top...

You're only gonna buy one gun?

... Yeah, we all thought that at one time ;)

Any thoughts on a .308?
Either way, good luck to you man.

Of the two rifles you mentioned, I have shot both, and owned a Sako Greywolf. It it one of the few rifles I regret selling, the only consolation I have is that it went to my sister as a christmas present for my brother in law. He loves it too. The Sako is worth the extra money over the Tikka in my opinion. Handling is superb, function flawless, accuracy guaranteed. The 7mm Rem mag is one of the very best choices available for a deer/elk/moose rifle. Put a nice 3-9x scope on it in good ring mounts like the Leupold or Optilocks and you'll be happy for life. I found the Leupold VxII silver and low silver Optilocks a perfect match for mine.

Sako would get my vote over the Tikka which is also btw an excellent rifle. I'd question the calibre selection but only on grounds that it may be less than optimal for a seasonal shooter. If asked I'd recommend a 30-06 for the game in question.

Unless you're strapped for cash it's a clear choice.
A Tikka is just a cheaped out Sako. Fine rifle if that's all you can afford but if you want a lifetime rifle, buy the real deal.

I own a sako grey wolf in 7mm rm. Id buy another if I did it over again. I was also looking for the 1 and only first big game rifle, and I haven't been disappointed. 3-9-40 zeiss low optilocs butler creek caps 162g sst 62g H4831 or 68g H1000, under .5 inch. Its a keeper, and it looks good.

"...that I can hand down to my kid..." You can expect to do that with any rifle. They're the only mass produced product that you can expect to hand down.
"...Elk aren't magical..." Only reindeer are magical. You don't need a magnum of any kind to kill any game in North America.
"...my freezer full..." Magnums usually make that more difficult due to the excessive felt recoil, cost of ammo, etc deters the casual hunter from practicing.

I would say Sako over the tikka. It wouldnt hurt to check out Cooper firearms, the Sako price tag is almost the same as Coopers base models which are exceptionally nice rifles. Ive always liked the look of Kimbers as well. If you think youll only have one rifle it may as well be a Really nice one. As for caliber I will suggest 280 Rem as a good non magnum all rounder, the only thing is if you dont handload shells might be difficult to get? 7mag, 3006 I think are good choices for the non handloader, there are many others that would be fine as well.
