hoping to discuss Winchester 64s?

For those who have used the Winchester 64 I was hoping to ask about the rifle. I must admit that the 64 is more appealling to me than the 94. Just wondering about handling and accuracy and such?
 
They handle like a 94 with a pistol grip and a longer barrel. Which is to say they handle nicely, the one I shot was certainly capable of deer out to 150 yards but after that I lose faith in the standard factory sights. I recal the best group I shot with it being something like 2".
 
Win 64

Best lever made by Win since the war years. Smooth action and very accurate with 26 in barrel. Hard to find. If you see a good one buy it quick. Dabbler.
 
Jack O'Connor used to call the 64, the best stocked lever rifle for woods hunting ever made. I have owned a couple plus a 64 carbine which are really scarce. Actually they had a 24 inch barrel unless you can find one in .219 Zipper which I think came with a 26 inch barrel. They are a super brush gun but please don't put a scope on it.

I would never scope a Winchester traditional lever. Scoped my Marlin 444 with Leupold's UL 2.5X and hated it. Shot nice, was deadly accurate for hunting, helped my old eyes but the darn scope ruined the carrying and handling of the lever action. Nothing carries as nice as a traditional lever in the hand. I went back to my peep sight and the restricted range.

The 64 is a fine looking rifle and would match up to a peep or tang sight real well. waiting on my PAL but might budget for one in the new year. I'll be casting for a 32-20 and the 30-30 or 32 Win Special are excellent cast shooters I've heard.
 
As far as I'm concerned they shoot just as good, they're just not as high quality. Stamped parts, less polish, worse inletting etc., the usual 1960's and 70's beefs.
 
I've always felt the Model 64 was one of the most nicely balanced and attractive rifles Winchester built. Classy.
To me, the ultimate 64 would be a 25-35. Scoping one would have a negative effect on handling and appearance. This means I would have to shoot it without really seeing the sights. Probably not the most practical situation but, there it is. Regards, Bill.
