I have a Remington model 58 12 ga. that has been fired fewer than 20 times. The barrel is 30" and chambered 'Full'.

I have contacted five (5) local-ish gunsmiths with a request to have the barrel threaded for screw-in chokes. The consensus is that this barrel cannot be threaded; and, any mod to it would be reaming to a larger size only.

Does anyone have any history with this specific quest, and if so, did you find anyone who would/ could do it ..... or was the option reaming to CYL (etc.)?

i don't think the 870 bbl is adaptable to the 58
the 870 bbl is adaptable to the 878 hence 878
then came the 1100
not sure what the big deal is have it opened to a modified constriction and good to go
you could send it to briley and for about 700$ canadian they will put thin walls in it no problem but you are not able to shoot steel thru then walls
use it for what it is /was and buy a modern gun

My brother built a custom Wigmasyer from parts in the 60's when he worked for a well known gunsmith.
It has two barrels, one for trap and one for skeet . The skeet barrel is from a 58 Remington .

The simplest solution is to open the choke to improved cylinder and enjoy using it with steel on migratory birds and lead on upland. IC is perfect for steel shot.
The existing barrel has to be carefully measured to see what chokes it could be threaded for. Those old Remington barrels can not be threaded for Remington chokes. Thinwall chokes probably. If the barrel is concentric enough.

Or save your 30 inch full choke for clay birds.

Remington 870 barrels normally fit the Model 58 and then require the gas port to be located correctly and drilled the same as the existing barrel. Used to do that in the late 60's early 70's. Not much call later. Usually a new shotgun was purchased.
