Hornady​ Changes Everything - October 27th 2015

It's kind of neat they have discovered a common problem with plastic tipped bullets and come up with a solution. It is their research dollars spent doing this... they should be congratulated not criticized.
 
Wanna solve the huge dilemma of a plastic tip melting.....buy a bullet that doesn't have one like Bergers or Sierra SMK's, 99.999 % of the time they shoot 10x better then Hornadys.

If this is supposed be aimed at hunters its not earth shattering news either, majority of hunters shot are taken at 100-200 yards, no noticeable difference in accuracy in that distance and if plastic tip is a concern you buy a Barnes TSX.

I highly doubt your gonna see a line up in the gunstores for these....geez from the commercial you'd think it was a heat seeking bullet or something out of this world

. If Hornady wants to do something amazing perhaps they should design them to shoot as well as Sierras or Bergers, that would be ground breaking

That's a pretty bold and no so factual post.

The reason they use the plastic tip is for uniformity between bullet tips. Sure Berger does it pretty well, but Sierra??? *Scared*

If it were so good, why did Sierra just release the "green tip" SMK's? And you guessed it, with higher B.C. and revised shaped that more closely resembles the 178/208/Berger profile?

Good on them for catching a mistake with their projectiles, but makes you wonder if the others already knew this, or if they will soon jump on it. Ie, maybe the green tips use this high temp plastic already?

Either way, improvement made. Or I hope at least. Not just a marketing scheme.

30 Cal .308 178 gr ELD-X
Ballistic Coefficient (G1) .535
Ballistic Coefficient (G7) .271
Sectional Density .268

30 Cal .308 200 GR ELD-X
Ballistic Coefficient (G1) .626
Ballistic Coefficient (G7) .315
Sectional Density .301

I look forward to trying out the 200gr whenever it makes it here. That is a great bc for a 200 gr .30 cal.

Well, we can now clearly see that all the time they spent on "unexpected research", their PR department was still working full steam ahead.

I guess I came off a bit negative. Its great that they found a out that there was a problem that could be fixed making their great product even better.
Still I dont think it deserved the hype, but then again we all know about them now... hell I just stumbled accross sierras new 7mm 183 because of this thread.

I also look forward to these new ELD-x. Maybe they want to compete with Berger match hybrids. New ELD-x has a slightly better G1 BC. Now if they can keep the price down towards the AMAX rather than up towards the Bergers, then that's a winner.

Enjoying the comments, but look how effective the Zombie line has been.....effective marketing tapping into popular culture. I don't want to imagine how much that has helped their sales. Good for them. Make your own consumer choices.
 
exactly, a little boost in bc and reliable expansion.... sound fine to me. Game changer... I don't think so, but I am far from disappointed with the release of the 178gr 30 cal.... guess im easy to impress

bang on.... arm chair ballisticians flame on....


I think a lot of people are missing that its guts are SST's, which are a fan favorite hunting round, mixed with an AMAX characteristics in flight, but improved.
