Hornady .45acp 230gr HP/XTP

Have some of these and I use the Lee reloading book. Now would these be classified as a copper plated round? The book shows XTP's in 200gr but not 230gr. What would the XTP stand for?thx

XTP's just a brand name Hornady uses, I believe it stands for eXtreme Terminal Penetration.

No, they wouldn't be classified as copper plated. Copper plated bullets have a very thin copper jacket and behave somewhat more like cast bullets.

These bullets have a proper, thick copper jacket; if I had no specific data for XTPs, I would use data for FMJs.

That said, using data for copper plated bullets isn't dangerous.

As stated above, they are a real jacketed round. The lead core is clad by an actual copper jkt of about .018 thickness vs a plated bullet which is usually less than .005 thickness. Load jacketed as jacketed data suggests and plated as per lead recipies.

I picked up a box of these for my NORC and the dummy rounds I made wouldn't load properly. I made the switch to round nose FMJ and they work great. Here are the specs from the Hornady Manual:

#45160 HP-XTP
B.C.: 0.188 C.O.L.: 1.230"
